Meet Sony's incredibly small high definition camcorder: the HDR-HC1. At just under a pound and a half, it has tons of features. First, it has genuine 1080i resolution, so you shoot in real HDTV. Second, it uses HDV, which brings the resolution of HD to a tape the size of a Mini DV cartridge. Menu options are easy to choose, thanks to the 2.7" widescreen LCD SwivelScreen monitor. Super NightShot and Super SteadyShot Pro ensure great video under any conditions. Manual focus, zoom, shutter speed and white balance put you in total control. Sony goes one better than a CCD by using a CMOS sensor to generate images. This 3-megapixel CMOS processes faster than a CCD for richer color and better detail. The Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens also adds color and detail, plus reduces glare with its special T coating. Less

First consumer HD camcorder

Pros Great video quality.
Cons Fairly expensive. Doesn't have as many features as some standard definition...
Recommended it? Yes

This camera is really your only option right now for consumer HD video recording. The price is fairly steep due to the lack of competition, but it isn't unreasonable. The camcorder records video in 1080i HDV format on regular miniDV cassettes.

The camera is very compact and stylish,... Read full review »

INTRODUCTION
As an owner of an FX1 I decided to replace my Canon XM2 with a second HD camera, primarily to use as a safety cam & perhaps a player to save wearing out my man cam.

It's worth pointing out how small the HC1 is, I would put it at about a quarter of the FX1, almost pocket... Read full review »

Pros Great features, easy to use, excellent pictures, very light & compact, very good battery...
Cons I have yet to find a problem.
Recommended it? Yes

I chose the DVD format so that I could transport my media without having to carry my camera. I also wanted something that I could easily play in my computer. For my home system, however, the high-definition recorded video will have to be played back from the camcorder (or a Blu-Ray DVD player or... Read full review »
