Pioneer Electronics, the acknowledged leader in optical disc technology, introduces a third generation DVD/LD player - DVL-919, which proves to be the perfect transition product for movie enthusiasts everywhere.??The DVL-919's new video circuitry, boasts improved video performance for DVD, due to a 10-bit video processing LSI (Large Scale Integrated Circuit). The DVD format's 8-Bit video information is requantized into 10 bits for more accurate processing - resulting in fewer digital artifacts. This Pioneer-developed video LSI combines, on a single chip, the MPEG2 decoder, 10-bit video processor, 10-bit DAC, NTSC encoder and audio decoder. Finally, to further the video clarity, the DVL-919 also features component video outputs, which provide the purest form of video available in any consumer video product to date. To compensate for physical flaws in the software, such as disc flatness and hole centering, Pioneer has developed a "ViterBi" decoding circuit. This proprietary circuit enables reading accuracy t... For the optimal high definition Blu-ray video experience at home, the Elite BDP51FD features True24fps capability. Because all your favorite movies are filmed at 24 frames-per-second (fps) while most home video systems are equipped to display video at 30fps, most standard systems have to subject film-based video content to alterations that make the 24fps content display ay 30fps. While this solves the problem, it also causes others — this alteration often results in the appearance of artifacts, or distortion of the video image. Tru24fsp capability, on the other hand, offers processing that seamlessly transfers the 24fps content on your favorite Blu-ray movie to your 24fps-compatible HDTV. Video as the director intended. Pros GREAT image and sound, looks amazing
Cons price is a little steep
Recommended it? Yes

For nearly 3 months, I had been longing for this player. I have many laserdiscs and DVDs, but I had no LD or DVD player (how's that for being smart, hahahah). Last December, I finally had raised enough money to buy this mammoth of a DVD player, and let me tell you....I am in shock at how remarkable... Read full review »

Pros Plays everything, quiet!
Cons Remote is not backlit
Recommended it? Yes

I bought the Pioneer DVL-919 because the local library has a huge collection of Laserdiscs. Of course, the DVD and CD section of the player is what I use most!

I got a huge markdown to $550 because it was the last one they had and they were getting out of laserdiscs. You should be able to... Read full review »

Pros Very good picture, sound and build quality. Reasonable price.
Cons Very glitchy and will frustrate average users.
Recommended it? Yes

I’ve often mused on the reasons why the DVD format became such a worldwide success. Was it simply a matter of the discs’ video quality being so much better than preceding VHS tapes? We’ll it couldn’t be just that otherwise “Laser Disc” would have assumed the crown years before. No, when you get... Read full review »

Pros great image and sound when it works
Cons rigged with continuous firmware bugs, very slow
Recommended it? No

I bought this unit thinking that I will get the best on the market for this price ... but I was totally wrong. I passed through two units because I just wanted to give a chance to this model. I just want to mention that I performed the test who revealed the glitches at  dealer's site and they come... Read full review »
