When we purchased our XBOX 360, the controller came with 2 AA batteries and an adapter to use them on the controller.  It was just fine to get you acquinted with the console and play a game for a day or two (about 2 hours a day).  The AA batteries don't last, even when we use our own Duracell... When I purchased the Xbox 360 for my husband, I also bought two wireless controllers to go along with it. What I should have done at the same time was purchase the Xbox Rechargeable Battery. The guitar feels cheap. The whammy bar doesn't go in all of the way and is harder to operate. The joystik that substitues the arrow buttons is extremly crappy.
