The ER-4 MicroPro(tm) earphones from Etymotic are the next best thing to live music, with noise isolation far surpassing that of active-noise-reduction earphones. The ER-4's require no batteries, and can be plugged into any audio source. Their 20-25 dB of external noise exclusion allows you to hear the full dynamic range of recordings without having to play them at unnaturally high and unsafe levels. Less

The Purchase

I had been looking for some new headphones to replace my Sony MDR-D22s. The Sonys sounded fine, but they were too big for me to carry around with my mp3 CD player. The Sonys were also semi-open, meaning that some sound leaked in from outside, and some of my music leaked out... Read full review »

B is for bright!

Pros Great with binaural recordings
Cons very limited use, bright with stereo recordings
Recommended it? Yes

The Etymotic ER4B is the most specialized of Etymotics 3 ear phones. Designed to work with binaural recordings, their equalization circuit compensates for the rolled off high frequencies lost due to the binaural process. These recordings use a dummy head with microphones in the ears to record the... Read full review »

Pros Awesome sound quality and accuracy. Great canalphones for $US150 or A$200. Available...
Cons Fidelity not up to ER-4S or Shure E4c. Expensive for the casual listener
Recommended it? Yes

I've had many earphones over the years, from the humble Sennheiser MX400's and Sony EX71's to the more expensive Etymotics.

But I've been wanting a pair of earphones I can travel with - not a $400 pair but something a little bit cheaper but still sounds exceptional. That's where the... Read full review »

ER-6i Excellent Noise Isolation, Wonderful Sound

bykm21 Mar 1, 2005
16 Helpfuls 17 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Amazing - you'll enjoy music and movies on an airplane.
Cons Got to clean them sometimes, slight discomfort.
Recommended it? Yes

The ER-6i is a newer version of the ER-6. It comes in white (to match your iPod), offers more sound isolation (3 rubber rings instead of two) and has slightly higher bass response than the 6.

I have a pair of Sennheiser noise canceling headphones which work wonderfully. But on a noisy... Read full review »
