WD Caviar 120 GB Special Edition, the latest addition to Western Digital's reliable, award-winning hard drive family, is designed to maximize desktop computer performance for activities requiring high-performance hard drives such as computer gaming, digital video editing, and file server applications. The WD Caviar 120 GB Special Edition is equipped with an 8 MB buffer - the largest buffer available today in a 7200 RPM desktop EIDE hard drive, delivering data to users faster than any hard drive in its class. ??The Special Edition hard drive provides a higher percentage of cache hits than industry-standard 2 MB versions. Within the complex operations of hard drives, the buffer is used to hold the results of recent reads from the disk, and also to "pre-fetch" information that is likely to be requested in the near future. The use of an increased buffer improves the performance by reducing the number of physical accesses to the disk and allowing data to stream from the disk uninterrupt... Less

Western Digital 120GB Hard Drive (WD1200JB): Got gigs?

byrice75 Jun 3, 2003

Pros Storage space for whatever you can think of.
Cons None that I have encountered.
Recommended it? Yes

As I was choosing the different parts to my new PC, I read review after review extolling the virtues of the Western Digital 120GB Hard Drive (WD1200JB) but I couldn't justify the $200 price tag. But, as luck would have it, I was scanning the weekly ad from CompUSA and found this very hard drive,... Read full review »

Just adding my experience to the list...

Pros Fast, cheap drive. Painless warranty replacement process.
Cons Painfully unreliable.
Recommended it? No

Like other reviewers here, I've experienced an unacceptably high failure rate with the WD1200JB drives. I try not to quickly judge a product (and jump on epinions to bash them) based off of a single failure when that failure probably isn't statistically significant. However, my experience with the... Cons Slow, software could be more intuitive
Recommended it? Yes

The Western Digital 120GB Dual Option Back Up USB Drive is a 7200 rpm 120GB hard drive housed in an external enclosure. This drive is coupled with a "lite", but truly functional version of Dantz Retrospect backup software, that is integrated into the design of the drive. There are two buttons on... Read full review »

Pros Easy to use, very quiet, intelligent unit.
Cons Software takes some getting used to.
Recommended it? Yes

I've only been using this drive for a little over a week, but it's been great so far. It is very easy to setup, it's very quiet, and it comes with feature-rich software.

I had no issues setting up the hard drive, and Windows XP recognized the device as it should. The Dantz software that... Read full review »
