I ordered a WII Bundle from Buy.com today. I used a credit card associated with my home address and had shipping set to deliver to my home address.

Yet 8 hours after I placed my order I received an email asking I fax back an Order Authorization form which required I fax a sheet with a copy of my credit card and driver's license. I emailed asking why. Tired of waiting for a response I searched for a phone number (which they don't publish on their site - a big red flag I should have noticed before placing the order).

When connected to a customer service rep I was informed that this policy protects me, them and their vendors from fraud. Of course there are automated ways of avoiding fraud that fall short of my faxing a copy of my drivers license and credit card to (I assume) India. In my opinion this exposes me to possible fraud. I don't like the idea of my credit card and license being on a hard copy floating around an outsourced office.

So - I asked to cancel my order. Of course, even though the item hasn't shipped, Buy.com has put an authorization hold on funds in my account. I was told the cancellation will take 5 days. I can only assume (as I wait to speak to a supervisor) that the authorization won't be lifted till the 5 days pass.

All and all a laughable and somewhat painful experience.

Avoid them.
