Decent Selection, Great prices on some items, super fast shipping

Full review

Even though they have been around for several years, I have just never really paid attention to buy.com since they never really had decent prices on what I was looking for. . .until the last few months.

A couple of months ago I was looking for a basic video card to upgrade my PC so that I could do some High Def applications on it. Buy.com had a crazy deal on a GeForce 7300 card that ran for $47 shipped with a $30 mail in rebate on top of that. Certainly not a top of the line graphics card but definitely suitable for the job. Given buy.com's somewhat mixed reviews I was hesitant but at the price I figured I would give it a shot. I was impressed immediately when my order was processed and shipped within 24 hours. Registration is the same as any other site you purchase from and just as easy to sign up with. Submit name, e-mail, address and credit card info, ect. and you are good to go.

Unfortunately I didn't realize that the card was PCI-Express and my motherboard is old enough that it doesn't have it. So I had to ship the item back. They did charge me a 15% restocking fee since I was stupid and did open the package. The time to return the item and get my money back also took about 7 business days and I had to e-mail them and make sure they had received my item.

I was kinda bummed by not having a video card for that cheap but I figured I could hold out for a while and see what else turned up. A month or so later, an i-net buddy of mine posted that buy.com had 1GB Kingston SD card for a whopping $10 shipped or if you were a first time google checkout user, you could get the card for free as they knock $10 off of your first purchase with google checkout. Buy.com is partnered with them. Google checkout is a free service to sign up with and it is just like registering with the website that you order directly from. It's just that for your first time use they give you $10 off. Unfortunately I had already used my $10 first time google checkout promotion at an earlier date on another site. Still though, at $10 shipped for 1GB of memory, how could I go wrong. Once again the item shipped within 24 hours and was here in a matter of 3-4 days with the free budget shipping. I gave it to my parents for their Canon A410 Digital camera and it works great and now they can take tons of pictures with their digital camera without running out of memory.

Buy.com has also had some great deals overall on other computer related stuff as of late such as graphics cards and recordable media. I intend to order some 8x Double Layer Verbatim DVD+R from them in the near future as they have the best price bar-none on these high quality discs.

Overall I would say that Buy.com offers a decent selection on various items (though not quite as much as a specialty site such as newegg.com), is starting to get some great prices and deals on electronics/computer items and definitely can process and ship orders with speed, even for standard shipping. The only negative thing is the return process. So be absolutely sure of what you are ordering before you purchase and hope you don't get a DOA item.
