I've placed about 12 orders per year from buy.com over the past 3 years. It's my favorite online shopping site, because I'm cheap! For the books, CDs, DVDs, & computer-related items I buy, I usually find that the cheapest price is at buy.com. I'm also not in a rush to get the item if I can save on shipping, and I find that just about everything I buy from buy.com qualifies for free shipping. Once or twice when checking online the status of my order, I've found that an item is on long backorder and the one time I wanted to cancel that item, I just clicked a few buttons and was set. The items that come from California make it to Seattle in a few days; the stuff from their East Coast warehouse usually takes a week. I'd still be happy if a shipment took two weeks (but none yet has taken more than 8 days).
I haven't yet had any errors in my orders, although frequently multiple-item orders are shipped as multiple packages from their different warehouses; everything I've ordered has shown up in the end, so I don't have any complaints about this practice. Since I haven't had any errors, I don't have any experience with live customer service, but given the lack of money that all but the premium outlets have to spend on customer service, that's probably a very good thing. I *have* been very pleased with the ease of setting up multiple credit cards & delivery addresses on the buy.com website, and with the ease of looking up previous orders and monitoring their shipment status online. I find this aspect significantly better than Amazon.com. Checkout is very straightforward, too.
I'm willing to put up with a bit of hassle for prices about 10% lower than the best of the others & free shipping to boot. My surprise has been that I *haven't* had to put up with any hassle at buy.com. (Note: the closest I've ever placed an order to Christmas was 11 days [this year] and even with free (slow) shipping, I got it in 7 days.)
Bottom line: it's no Neiman-Marcus or Nordstrom's, but with the lowest prices & free shipping it doesn't have to be; I always turn to it first when shopping online.
