Viewsonic VX710 17" Flat Panel Monitor

The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this monitor to anyone looking to replace an aging CRT. However, I wouldn't recommend this monitor to be used on a gaming system.
We have several of our senior management people that have laptops that they also use as their desktop computers when they are at their desks. For users we have set them up with 17" LCD flat panels so they don't have to stare at a small laptop screen when at their desks. We just recently purchased a new Viewsonic Digital LCD Display for one of our users.
The model we chose was the Viewsonic VX710 Digital LCD Display. This turned out to be a great purchase for us. It was a snap to setup and great monitor to boot. I have owned a couple of Viewsonic CRT monitors of my own so I am well aware of Viewsonic's quality. So when my boss brought the monitor back from CompUSA I was glad.
The monitor was well packed in the box along with CD with drivers in case you need them. I didn't need them when I hooked up this monitor on the laptop. The monitor includes connectors for SVGA (15pin) and DVI (Digital), but it only includes a SVGA cable. I would recommend if your video card has a DVI connector on it that you take advantage of the capability that this monitor has. Using the digital feature of the video card and DVI connector on this monitor you will improve your output on your screen. Since Viewsonic didn't include the digital cable you will either have to buy a separate cable or use an adapter to change the SVGA connector to DVI to hook up to the monitor.
Now that the computer is running it is time to go through the display setup in the Operating System. This is accomplished in Windows OS by accessing the control panel and clicking on the display icon. This brings you to a popup menu that allows you to customize your display settings. By clicking on the Settings tab you bring up the menu that allows you to alter the display settings like display resolutions and color options. This monitor is capable of running resolutions: 720x400, 640x480, 800x600, 1280x1024
Note: 1280x1024 is the optimum setting for this monitor.
Once you have the video resolution set inside the OS, you can go in and make changes to the monitor settings. This is done using the OSD (On Screen Display) function that is built into the monitor. It is menu driven and you use the buttons located on the bottom edge of the monitor. There are five flat silver buttons and each one does a specific function. The far right hand one is the power button and it has a small LED to indicate the power status of the monitor (Green indicates monitor is on and Amber indicates no video signal is present). The other four buttons are used to navigate through the OSD menu to make the required changes to the monitor. The labels for each button are located just below the black bezel on the silver accent that frames the entire black bezel. The four buttons are labeled 1, 2 , up , down and using these buttons as described by the OSD menu. I am not going to list all of the settings that listed in the OSD, but brightness, contrast and screen position are just to name a few. An important setting that is included is the Auto Tuning feature, this will detect the settings of your OS video settings and auto adjust all of the monitor settings to give the optimum video output.
I like the design of this monitor with the ultra thin black bezel and the silver accent helps to improve the overall picture. The overall dimensions are 15.3" W x 17.2" H x 7.0" D (with the stand) and it weighs a very slight 11 lb. Just in case you are trying to figure out how they came up with a 17" viewable screen when the monitor is only 15.3" wide. The viewable measurement is diagonal and not straight across the monitor. If you would like to mount this monitor on the wall, you do this by removing the base and using the built in mounting holes. If you remove the stand to mount it on the wall the monitor is only 2.4" thick. Viewsonic also included a couple of staple items on this monitor; their trademark three multicolored birds logo and their Viewsonic name are prominently place at the upper left hand corner and lower part of the bezel just above the OSD buttons. I would have liked for Viewsonic to include built-in speakers so we don't have to order a separate set of speakers.
My final thoughts
This monitor is a super addition to our inventory of computer equipment. It is really easy on the eyes and that is important since the users that are currently using them are constantly staring at them all day. The colors are very crisp at the optimal resolution setting of 1280 x 1024 and the decent refresh rate keeps everything perfect. The screen is pretty bright and that is due to the 450:0 contrast ratio and 300-nit brightness and a refresh rate at 25 ms. Since we don't use any of our computers for playing video games we don't have a need for a LCD flat panel that has a high refresh rate. I don't recommend this monitor if you will be playing any of the highly graphic computer games due to the low refresh rate. I don't notice the mouse pointer disappearing as I move it across the screen like I have seen with some flat panel monitors.
If you are looking to replace a room full of monitors that will be running non graphical software I definitely recommend this monitor or even just a single monitor on your desk at home this will work great.
