The Bottom Line:
Buy it without fear. As stated, good looking, good sound, good price.
I had a pair of cheap tinny sounding speakers, you know the kind, the ones that come with the PC; the kind you use only because they are there. After discovering Internet Radio and having music while I worked at home, the miserable sound of the old speakers got to me one day. A visit to three computer shops clearly demonstrated one thing: like with good quality stereo equipment, if you cannot listen to the units side-by-side, just buy what sounds good for the price. Over the last couple of years, I have become very fond of Costco's no questions asked return policy which allows me to try many items that I might not normally purchase; this became the latest experiment. Costco had three different brands with the Altec Lansing VS4121 having the largest desktop units while still looking good and not taking up much desktop real estate. Pick up, purchase, drive home, give it a test.
The Altec Lansing VS4121 computer speakers are an excellent set for general home PC use. The overall sound quality is very good, with good treble and bass. The speaker mounted controls are trivial to use. This is a simple plug and play item: unpack, string the wires, connect to the PC sound jack, plug the unit to the electric outlet, and listen. The sub-woofer is well controlled, not overly boomie at all, the desktop units have good sound quality; they are not at all "tinny". I did not test this for video game sound but do use the unit for internet radio and PC based music; I find the sound reproduction excellent, but if you are looking for a unit for video games, I can only assume that this would be excellent for that sound genre also. Overall, it is a good value, low space taker, good looking desk and floor unit. Cannot really ask for more than that, eh?
