The Bottom Line:
A definite reccomend because despite it's size it functions well, lasts long, and has a retractable cord.
I didn't know exactly what to expect from this mouse. I have tried mini-mice in the past, and it always seems they fall a little short of their larger counterparts. I had to buy it though, for the usual reasons one would need a small sized mouse: I own and consistently use a laptop. And I must admit, at first I was afraid that it would not meet the functional demands of my laptopping needs. But after a solid year of use, the Targus Ultra Mini Optical mouse stands on its own as one of the best mice, all sizes included, I have ever used.
This mouse's optical function is smooth, elegant, easy to install... in fact I haven't run into a single problem with the interface apparatus itself. It runs well over reasonably rough surfaces, and it has never unexpectedly, shut down on me, or 'jumped' over a section of the screen for a physical reason (sometimes due to the speed of my computer, but we can't go blaming the mouse for that can we?)
Also this mouse has lasted a good while. A year's worth of use is a moderately long time for a mouse, and I have seen no decline in the quality of its use, or in the function of the retractable cord (which I will get to later.). Also, the left, right, and scroll keys still function appropriately, with no stickiness involved.
Something else to consider is that the Targus comes with a retractable cord. This is a nice feature, due to the ever changing cord-length needs of a portable computer. I myself sometimes have trouble operating the cord-length-changing mechanisms of this mouse, but that is just me. It has still proven to be a valuable feature, and far better that either a too short or too long cord alternative.
One major qualm I have with this mouse is that it can be difficult to deal with in a virtual gaming setting. The size itself does lend to slight accuracy issues, which, while not prevalent during normal school, work, Internet browsing use, can become burdensome during a game, especially a first-person shooter. The size itself lends to really jerky movement, and the general discomfort that a small mouse brings makes gaming difficult. It is also really light, which just contributes more to the jerkyness. But for normal use it works just fine.
Other than that though a great mouse, a definite buy if you are in the market.
