Sounds Fabulous
Pros
Great build image resolution good dynamics and extension on lows and highs. Great street price.
Cons
Needs cable matching and belly support.Remote build quality. Skips on scratched CDs
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Potentially great sound with CDs, ease of use and functionality unseen before in the other multichannel Sony players. Fabulous SACD sound
This is a beautifully built machine. It is a pleaure to operate via the faceplate. The load tray is one of the finest I have seen. The remote control however is the standard Sony cheapie but I suppose it serves the purpose.
The machine plays stereo SACDs extremely well through the 2 channel output. I could not tell a difference on A/B with this output compared to its SPDF feeding an Audio Research DAC 5.
There is a slight audible difference when in multichannel mode. Sony has some sort of explanation for this - to do with the multi DACs being used in stereo only mode. Still sounds great though.
I found this machine's output (via the RCA jacks) sensitive to cables. It took me about a year trying to get it to sound right with standard CDs. Once well matched it will show good rythm and pace and a polished sound that puts it in the envied company .
My machine is sensitive to scratched discs and needs good support. I place it belly flat on top of 3 inches of layers of soft sponge-backed carpet mats to get the best imaging and pace.
The cables I finally settled on were Alpha Core Goertz Silver Micropurl. You can buy this fair priced raw cable and solder it to low capacitance connectors of your choice. Wonderful.
Sytem:
Preamp: Copland 301 MK II tube hybrid
Amps: Moon W5 (unmodded)
Speakers: Home brew 8" Morel/1" Scanspeak/ 2 way bass reflex multi chamber tower
