The Bottom Line:
Even without SuperAudio CD's, my music sounds great on Sony's SCD-CD595 5-Disc Changer.
If you are an audiophile, chances are you're way beyond the five disc CD changer, but for those who want to upgrade from the first multiple disc CD player they bought in the 80's without completely revamping their entire audio setup, Sony's SCD-CD595 5-Disc CD Changer is a great choice.
The product has been on the market since mid 2004 and plays regular CDs, CD-Rs burned off of a PC, and special SuperAudio CD's. The product specifications say you can also play CD-RW on the Changer, but I have not been successful in getting it to read these ReWritable CD's.
We received it as a gift for Christmas in 2004, but the product runs about $150 - a terrific value.
The SuperAudio format produces higher sound resolution than regular CDs. The best metaphor I can offer for the difference between regular CD's and SuperAudio CD's is this - have you ever saved a small .jpg or .gif image and tried to blow it up? Low resolution images become filled with squares of color, or pixels, that make up the picture when you try to blow it up. High resolution images can be blown up significantly larger without becoming pixelated. Similarly, the sound of these and other CD's is much better than on regular CD Players.
We are really rediscovering a lot of albums since we received this product. We were missing an awful lot of cadence and clarity of percussion and cymbals on our old player. We've also been able to play lots of CD's that we'd nearly given up on - discs that simply weren't readable on our old player any longer. The multi-channel reader on the SCD-CD595 has saved us lots of money we would have wasted purchasing new copies of our old CD's.
The player features a blue and red LCD display that is very legible from across the room. The horizontally scrolling display will show any burned information on the CD, such as what you'd see on satellite radios or on your PC (artist, title, etcetera).
The remote control is also very easy to use and haven't changed the battery that came with it in December. Remote has all of the regular tracking and changing features, as well as my favorite REPEAT button. I will warn you not to lose the remote though, as I cannot see a way to hit repeat from the chassis itself. The remote is the only place I've been able to access the feature from.
Unfortunately, there is a downside to the player - it's difficult to make the most out of it because there is not a good selection in SA-CD's. At the time the product was released, there were less than two thousand titles out. Furthermore, SA-CD's are more difficult to find at discounted or used prices. One of the most comprehensive selections is at SuperAudio-CD.com.
Setup
Setup is about as simple as it gets with this product. Basically it's plug and play.
We're using the Sony SCD-CD595 with a Technics Quartz Synthesizer AM/FM Stereo Receiver SA-GX300 and two massive freestanding KLH speakers. The sound is EXCELLENT!

"Featuring multi-channel super audio CD, this CD player offers a superb sound experience. Additional features include CD/CD-R/CD-RW playback1 capability, multi-channel management system and multi-channel direct stream digital decoder. Use Jog Dial control with Direct Access track selection to control your listening experience and get ready to rock." - Sony
The chassis is adjustable and very stable. We have an equalizer and a turntable sitting on top of the chassis and it's remained steady when bumped. Also, the player doesn't skip when children run around the house, which is nice! The unit also features a dial to quickly skip through tracks.
The dual laser assembly is also a Sony innovation from the late 1990's that is also used in their DVD Players.
Sony makes other SACD products, and although I mentioned that there is currently a poor selection of SA-CD's, new titles are being released all of the time and the multi-channel audio output capability makes a difference regardless of whether or not you purchase these CDs.
And for $150, the price is right.
