great video, bad choice on the chip
Pros
Great Video Quality
Cons
Restrictive recording no s-video main input at the rear of the machine
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
In my opinion i would recomend seeking out a unit without this chip otherwise just get a tivo.
THIS IS AN EXPRESS REVIEW:
The Good:
First the video quality of this machine is excellent. I like the idea of how slim and compact it is and it matched my ns70 perfectly. it accepts all types of DVDs including DL.
The Bad:
There is no s-video input on the rear main inputs of this machine? I just don't get this decision by Sony.
The Ugly:
Copy protection chip. This unit will shut down when you try to time shift any premium channel after 9 seconds of recording. Here's my problem with this: How long will it be before all other cable channels and your local channels decide to activate this chip and protect their material from copying? For instance the TV show 24 is available on DVD so would fox not be able to sell a lot more DVDs if you could no longer record them? How about the NFL, Movies on basic cable channels the list goes on and on. In my opinion the only thing you may be able to record from this machine in the future is the news.
I opted to return this unit to the store as I simply felt this unit would be too restrictive in the future and I sought out a unit that does not have this chip in it. I do not know what Sony's fetish is with piracy any more but it would seem that they are now labeling the end consumer as a pirate as well. with this experience with the 315 I will not be buying any blu-ray machines either. Simply the disappointing news about them is pointing in this direction as well.
