Good Quality, Good Enough Sound, but Why no Backup?

byscmrak Apr 6, 2006
45 Helpfuls 46 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros well-made and attractive, decent sound quality and features
Cons no battery backup, check orientation before installing
Recommended it? Yes

I'm a long-time NPR junkie (your suspicions are confirmed: I am a pinko-commie, though I don't have an ACLU membership). So when I moved to a semi-rural Midwestern community, I was a little surprised to find no "Morning Edition" on the left end of my FM dial: instead, it was hidden over on the AM... Read full review »

TV/WEATHER/FM/AM CD Kitchen Clock Radio Sony ICF-CD543RM, Average

byJBduckling Oct 24, 2008
33 Helpfuls 34 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Easy to install with directions, CD player is fine. Good Sony sound.
Cons Power cord is FM antenna, which has its challenges.
Recommended it? Yes

We were looking for a new kitchen radio, a basic model, one that tells the time, AM and FM, along with a CD player. There were "cube" models around but we wanted something small and out of the way. That is when we came upon the Sony ICF-CD543RM Clock radio and we purchased this model instead of the... Read full review »

So-so Performance and How To Improve

bypduggan Mar 13, 2005
10 Helpfuls 11 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Handy, under-counter design. Acceptable sound quality.
Cons Poor FM reception unless power cord is lengthened.
Recommended it? Yes

Living in a rural area, I wasn't expecting great FM reception but out of the box this Sony product with its power cord FM antenna was unacceptable. Disappointing after spending $ 90.

Not finding any information on the antenna, I opened it up and traced the FM antenna schematic. The... Read full review »

Good looks, but disappointments

byzagatt Dec 1, 2002
13 Helpfuls 14 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Sleek styling, good sound on FM & CD
Cons Poor sound on AM, TV & WX, dumb volume control, overpriced for the performance delivered.
Recommended it? No

I really really wanted to like this product, had seen it a few times in stores, and when it (finally!) went on sale I bought one right away.

I have had an old GE Spacemaker AM/FM clock radio mounted under one of the kitchen cabinets for years, and it has worked well, but had old-style... Read full review »

Don't expect much for $100+

byscream Sep 1, 2003
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros It's just OK. AM is OK.
Cons Audio performance. It just doesn't function like a $119 radio should.
Recommended it? No

This product's faults are in what it doesn't do.

I was very excited to get this item. I think that in this decade and the past it is simply unnecessary to manually tune a radio. I wanted to have a radio neatly tucked out of the way, which I could listen to any of my preferred stations... Read full review »

SONY missed the boat on this one

byMaldez_dt1 Oct 31, 2004
10 Helpfuls 11 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Nice, pleasing sound.
Cons Lousy CD features. No external antenna.
Recommended it? No

This unit had so much potential but ultimately fell short in a number of areas. Construction appears to be of quality materials, the styling is good and it carries the SONY name. So far, so good. It handles a variety of CD formats and has a rich pleasing sound for a compact unit.

So, if... Read full review »

No competition for under cabinet with weather.

bygzuckier Jun 12, 2003
5 Helpfuls 6 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Cute; weather radio, broadcast tv sound, bass boost, slick mounting
Cons No under-light, no cable tv sound, no auto volume countrol, i prefer tuning knobs
Recommended it? Yes

Not a bad unit; looks pretty.
AM is staticy the way I have it mounted, but I didn't extend the cord they way you are supposed to, and I don't care about AM. In my area picks up two weather radio stations, and two broadcast TV stations (no UHF). No provision for cable TV, or any kind of signal... Read full review »

Pros Makes sense, saves space in kitchen. Sound is good.
Cons LCD screen too small.
Recommended it? Yes

This Sony undercounter radio is a great crowd pleaser. The version with the TV was beyond my price range but this guy is just right in terms of price, function and SIZE. Yes it fits snugly under the kitchen counter and it was a charm to install. This is going to be THE Christmas gift that we will... Read full review »

My kitchenized Sony experience

Pros Looks nice and sleek and matches the accessories in the kitch.
Cons Sound sucks<br>Costs a lot<br>Antenna sucks

We bought our "clock radio cd" about 5 years ago when the local Sears store had them on sale. We had a GE undercounter am\fm stereo cassette at the previous place, and really liked it, so I thought the Sony would blow it away as far as sound quality. And it looked neat and modern, and went with... Read full review »
