The Bottom Line:
If you don't care about the the aesthetics, functional and remote issues, the picture and sound are very good.
Good-Great picture with HDMI but... Sony cheaped out a little for an ES piece. All the new silver ES pieces to this point had the new embossed SONY logo on the front panel which was very cool. Sony as per usual decided to mix and match, and slapped a cheap plastic SONY label on the front of this player instead. Aesthetics are part of the reason you pay more for the ES line and SONY should have obviously not done this and kept the styling and quality consistent throughout the ES line. The remote is also exceedingly cheap, it is functional, but much too small and it seems every year they choose certain buttons to be illuminated over other ones which makes absolutely no sense, you can not see the buttons in a dim or dark room. Once again SONY should know, especially on the ES line to included remotes that are more substantial and with ALL the buttons glowing or illuminated. The last issue is that the response time and disk reading after entering a command is unbelievably slow (30 seconds). For what reason I can not fathom, its 2005, Sony's been making DVD players for how long??? And good luck to you if you left a DVD in the machine and just want to press eject to get it out. You will have to wait about 1 minute for the machine to read the whole disk, figure out you pressed eject instead of play and then maybe if you are lucky it will actually eject the disk without having to keep pressing the eject button. The picture with HDMI again is good-very good, depending on the DVD, the sound is excellent.
