Whatever You Do - Don't Buy!
Pros
10 mega pixels and nothing else.
Cons
No night vision, no night framing, and no video capturing features.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Don't buy DCS-R1. Buy a used F828 instead. Or wait till Sony come out with F909 or F929 or something similar.
Why such a strong negative assertion?
I originally had Sony F707 and I was quite happy with it. See my review on it:

It had night vision, night framing and video capturing features.
Truly, having that kind of features, plus taking pictures from a distant spot are quite useful. That should be a must for any entry level photographer. Anything less than that one might as well get one of those $100 digital cameras. New Sony cameras F707, F828, and DCS-R1 cost about the same!

Here, I am giving my experience of having this camera, F707 and F828.
Sony F828 is a more advanced version of F707 and I am so glad that I have that --- even if it is purchased through another owner.
During the month of November last year, someone had gone into my vehicle and took my Sony F707 camera. I was so devastated. It's an expensive camera and took me awhile before I could get a F707 camera.
In March of this year, I finally got my money from the insurance company. And I had happily gone back to Sony and was hoping to find a camera that was better than the F707.
To my great disappointment, DCS-R1 camera was the latest camera that Sony was promoting. What I noticed right away is that it didn't have the three features I so like: Night vision, night framing and capturing videos.
However, this camera does have 10.3 megapixels feature, so I thought what the heck, I already have a camcorder, so what I needed was something I could capture pictures in detail. F707 had only 5.0 megapixels and when pictures were taken from that camera, I could see little things in the background in great detail (when the picture was expanded).
So I had reasoned that DCS-R1 will do something similar.
I was wrong. I had used the full pixel feature and though I could see things in great detail --- it wasn't as close as my F707 gave. I wasn't able to get DSC-R1 to zoom in on details, like I could with F707. I had compared the pictures (previously taken from F707) and pictusres taken with DCS-R1. The comparison was not a fair test, but the recognition and noticing the difference right away were drastic enough.
I was majorly disappointed. I also bought the extended warranty for three years --- great waste of money! Apparently, the extended warranty was based on the performance deterioration. Now how do you prove that performance has gone downhill since you had purchased the camera?
After four months of having this DCS-R1 and trying out the features, I was slowly regretting that I had bought this camera. It was a total waste of money for such limited capability camera. Why did Sony go backwards with this supposedly amazing camera?
Well, on last Thursday morning, I was looking through the buy and sell web site, where private individuals could advertise their used items. There I saw Sony's F828. That was advertised at $600Can.
Immediately I contacted the owner. The guy had the camera for over two years and I was concerned that this camera might have something wrong.
BUT I WAS QUITE HAPPY when I played around with this F828 camera. Though it has only 8 megapixels, it actually takes better pictures than my DCS-R1 camera. By that I mean the pictures have greater details in its minimum pixels picture than the full pixel feature of DCS-R1.
I could actually take better, closer pictures with F828! Note this camera is at least two years old. That certainly doesn't say much about my new DCS-R1 cameara.
This F828 is better than my lost F707 camera and I am extremely happy with the desired three features.
If you are iffy about buying DSC-R1, then wait or buy a used F828 (or earlier model)!
If you are really gung ho about buying this DSC-R1, let me ask you: Would you like to take video clips with your camera (instead of carrying a camcorder around)? Lugging those two things is troublesome, especially if you are also carrying other accessories, like a hefty duty tripod.
Would you also like to take pictures in the dark and being able to see in the dark when you take pictures?
DSC-R1 won't let you do that, but the two year old model F828 does. That F828 also gives you better quality pictures. Better to wait for Sony to come out with F909 or F929 or something similar, than getting this DSC-R1.
I myself wish someone had given me that advice.
