Poor Quality - CD Player died after 18 months
Pros
Nice looking, handy remote, AM/FM/CD/Tape player, decent sound.
Cons
Died after 18 months of light use. No tone controls, line inputs or output jacks.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Avoid it. The Sony brand has seen better days and no longer stands for quality.
I bought the unit 18 months ago and keep it in my home office. It is only used for playing CDs for perhaps 2-3 hours a day and only for about the past 3 months has it been in use on a daily basis.
The sound quality was fair. It was fine for playing soft background music.
Last week the CD player started acting up, cutting in and out. I tried different disks to no avail, but after cleaning the laser lens it seemed to work better. Unfortunately, it started acting up again a few days later and nothing seems to help. The smell of burnt electrical insulation is discernable when the CD compartment is open.
Because it is used in a clean, dry, smokefree environment there is no good reason for it to die after 18 months of use.
After calling Sony for support I learned that because the (1 year) warranty has expired, they will be happy to replace the unit for more than I paid for it. Nothing else they will do. Tough luck. Not their problem.
Hmm... $69.38 to repair the unit -- what a joke! That's $19 more than I paid for it.
There was time that the Sony name actually meant something - you could depend on the products to last for a while. After speaking with a product specialist and his supervisor, it is clear that this is no longer the case. Obviously this is either a manufacturing defect or simply poor design. Other players have lasted 10 years or more.
No reason to buy Sony if a no-name player is just as good -- or better.
So, farewell Sony! There are of plenty of other better alternatives!
