Pros Use of this machine proved there are no pros.
Cons Phillips does not have the bugs out of this one. Try another brand.
Recommended it? No

Those of you new to the DVD recording world will be pleased to know that the Phillips DVD-R985 does everything it is supposed to do in a format that is more user friendly than the DVR-R format.

Although there as been some talk on the net about having to get new "firmware" to make this... Read full review »

Philips DVDR985 Recorder: A Keeper

byychromosome Sep 13, 2003

Pros Worked well right out of the box. Stable. Produces DVDs with high quality video
Cons Lousy manual, confusing and hard to use remote, and baffling on-screen menus
Recommended it? Yes

I bought one of these machines from Circuit City in June 2003. Paid about $ 270. It was in close competition with a comparably-priced recorder (DVD-R/-RW) from Panasonic.

I've been waiting a long time for a DVD recorder to transfer 8mm video onto. Been waiting for the price to come down,... Read full review »

Pros Nice front panel display
Cons What a total piece of garbage! Destroys all your disks as it makes them!
Recommended it? No

When I got this recorder 2 years ago for $700 I was so excited. It had component inputs, firewire, audio meter and so on. Over time my love affair went very sour and the recorder divorced me. I soon had Red disk error messages flashing as I recorded. Those really mean that your disk it over now -... Read full review »

Getting closer to VCR replacement

byderk99 Jan 19, 2003
9 Helpfuls 10 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Sleek design, good menu-making ability
Cons Format incompatible with -R DVD; replay of VHS and Betamax war
Recommended it? No

This unit was the first DVDR I tried. Keep in mind in Spring 2003 will be replaced by DVDR-80 in USA. This unit (985) is called the 880 in Europe. Also called the 985A in America.

Some background for those new to DVD recording first, because this is critically important.

Dont Buy!! Philips or Magnavox Junk

byhatephilips Jan 5, 2005
8 Helpfuls 9 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Works for about a month
Cons 800$ paperweight and customer dis-service robots are criminals
Recommended it? No

Philips/Magnavox is horrible. Look at the Cnet reviews for my broke DVDR985 recorder. Look at Ebay for all the 50$ broke recorders. I paid 800$ for a piece of junk. People are fed up with this thing and have moved to better stuff. The firmware update crashed my unit and Philips sent me to their... Read full review »

Not Ready for Prime Time...Be Patient

byshollis Dec 2, 2003
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Simple recording, good sound and picture quality, DVD+ has wide acceptance
Cons Cost, durability, complicated menus/interface, poor customer service
Recommended it? No

I'm a technology freak. I drool over the latest and greatest. I can only plead insanity for purchasing this Philips DVDR in January. $600 is a lot of money for my student budget, but I had just purchased a TiVo and wanted to get the movies off of TiVo and onto DVDs. My rationale for buying this... Read full review »

Philips finally worked out the bugs

byavideophile Jun 16, 2003
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros 6 different recording speeds. Video quality far exceeds VHS.
Cons Not quite as user-friendly as a VCR. Doesn't record Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.
Recommended it? Yes

I was hesitant to buy a DVD recorder due to all of the compatibility issues of playing DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW on older DVD players. I was also hesitant because of the negative reviews for Philips and Panasonic DVD recorders. I liked the Panasonic DVD recorder that allows you to record to... Read full review »

Wish there was a class-action for this POS DVDR985

bygladdys65 Jan 28, 2007

Pros Easy disk editing when it worked.
Cons Too selective on Disk media/speed, premature failure.

I, too, have had several errors with the Philips DVDR985 unit. Like others, it worked flawlessly during the warranty period. Thankfully, I opted for an extended warranty when I initially purchased my unit. It stopped recording to +R disks. After contacting tech support, I was told the same rah-rah... Read full review »

Pros Nothing
Cons the worse piece of electronics I ever bought
Recommended it? No

I bought one with the original firmware before it started freezing up. I called tech support, got the address to the repair station which was 1 hour away from my home. I took the unit in and within 3 weeks had it back. It worked fine for another 3 weeks and then started making coasters again. This... Read full review »
