The Bottom Line:
It isn't worth the price.
I don't have much in the way of technical vocabulary but here's my experience with the Onkyo Tx-SR606. I bought the unit as a replacement in March 2009 for roughly $400. There was a bit of difficulty setting it up, some due to the fact that the controls didn't correspond exactly to their descriptions in the Instruction Manuel, but they were minor. Once set up, the unit worked fine. It ran hot but so what. I used few of the adornments. The sound was as good as anyone might hope for. After about 19 months I noticed some problems. It began taking a much longer time to boot up. Other problems showed up, interference with the images on the Vizio TV. I isolated all the components of my home theater and tested them individually, finally locating the difficulty in the amplifier. I uncased it and dusted it thoroughly. I switched the inputs around. Nothing made any difference. The problems increased until finally the unit was not workable. (Who wants to wait ten minutes in the hope that his amplifier might finally turn on? How about half an hour? How about, if it should finally boot up, it will only play DVDs and not cable inputs?) I replaced it with a 5.1 Sony. Almost as good, and cheaper to replace if it blows its cork.
