The Bottom Line:
Perfect camera for extreme sports or mom and pop road-trips.
We bought the black one for a road-trip to Florida. We already had an Olympus Ultra-Zoom Camedia that takes wonderful high resolution photos with perfect colors. It was just too large to fit in a pocket and we liked it too much to chance it on a ride at Disney World or on a windy day at the beach.
We wanted a compact, weatherproof, sandproof, pocket proof, Olympus Camera that we could hold on to during a Splash Mountain Ride or drop on the wet sand at the beach. We also wanted the XD memory cards and the batteries to be interchangeable. We wanted an optical zoom lens. We wanted a flash that could be disabled for night shots. We wanted to be able to get great close-ups of flowers. Of course, we also thought it would be nice if it could come close to taking the same great photos that we've always enjoyed from our larger Camedia.
Well, we got most of it, anyway. It's definitely compact. About the size and weight of a pack of cigarettes. It has a nice strong lanyard (nine inches long) that you can attach to your belt or whatever for the Space Mountain ride. The camera body is smooth with nothing to catch on your pocket, poke you in the side, or break off when you jerk it out for those special photo ops.
It closes up tight when it's switched off and so far, it seems to shrug off the wind, rain, sweat and sand.
It uses the same Olympus XD memory cards and still gives us the same cool panorama photo capability. We got a 500 megabyte card which seems sufficient for vacation photos. For longer trips, we could swap out for our 1 gigabyte card.
It doesn't use the same rechargeable batteries though. So, we can't use the Camedia battery charger or its batteries. However, we are delighted to find out that the new rechargeable batteries for the Stylus 750 last about 10 times longer! I was used to carrying about 3 extra batteries around with me for a day of photo-taking. Not anymore!
It has a 5X optical zoom which is easy to operate.
Just like our Camedia, the flash can be disabled, used to brighten the subject for bright backgrounds, or to reduce red-eye.
It will take close-ups of flowers.
We don't think the photos are of the same quality as its larger brother, but close. Our kids say they don't see any difference, but maybe they're just being polite. Or maybe we're just spoiled by the exceptional quality of the Camedia photos. Either way, the Stylus is for going on road-trips, camping, swimming, etc. It's not going to be our main camera. But lately, even at home, when I reach for a camera, it's the Stylus 750 because it's quick and easy.
Yes, just like the other reviewers say, the viewscreen is difficult to see on a bright, sunny day. Yes, it's true, there's no viewfinder. At first, I thought this was going to irritate me. It turns out that it's really not a big deal. Most of the pics I take outdoors on bright, sunny days turn out just like I wanted. I can still tell what I've got framed in the viewscreen even when I'm wearing dark sunglasses. I figure if there was a viewfinder, it would probably be covered with dirt or pocket lint anyway.
If you get the camera, before you buy a carrying case for it, try an old cigarette case. Really though, this is one camera you won't need a case for. Just like reading glasses, I've had it in my pocket and found myself wondering where it was.
