The D70s "lite" ? Nikon's new D50 with Nikkor AF-S G DX f/3.5-f5.6/18-55mm Zoom

byHoward_Creech Aug 21, 2005
123 Helpfuls 124 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Very fast, solid build quality, outstanding image quality, and excellent battery life
Cons Kit lens is a bit soft in the corners, no DOFP button
Recommended it? Yes

One of the most remarkable consequences of the past decade is the almost lemming-like parade of consumers jumping on the digital camera bandwagon. Family snap-shooters, casual shutterbugs, and serious amateur photographers worldwide abandoned millions of perfectly good 35mm film cameras to collect... Read full review »

Nikon Got It Right!

byrwillard1 Aug 8, 2005

Pros Photo quality, flexibility and simplicity; ease of use with simple buttons and dials;...
Cons "Kit" lenses offered are less than great solutions, consider upgrading.
Recommended it? Yes

You can think of the Nikon D50 in two ways -- as a very intelligently "dumbed-down" (and less expensive) D70, or as a quantum (and more expensive) leap in terms of versatility and picture quality from even the most expensive P&S digital cameras on the market. Either way, Nikon has done right by... Read full review »

Pros Perfect size, perfect weight, countless features, built like a tank
Cons Top LCD not backlit but the same info's in the viewfinder
Recommended it? Yes

I've had my D50 for less than a month so far and let me tell you this thing is more than I wanted.

Initially I was just looking for an affordable way to take great pictures and still have room to hone my photography skills until the day I decided to "upgrade." I did TONS of research on... Read full review »

Before going on to the review, a key in whether or not this camera is right for you is whether you need an SLR. I've owned several digital cameras before. I love my Olympus C-3040 when I bought it a few years back for great automatic function and the ability to control some things manually. I'm... Read full review »

Nikon D50 - Perfect for the Serious Amateur

bycraigie Aug 17, 2005

Pros Great feel, layout, function controls, smart camera.
Cons NONE...no kidding!
Recommended it? Yes

Okay, let's do some soul-searching at the front end. If you're looking for a pro digital, stay with the larger formats, not the digital replacements for 35mm film cameras. However, if you are a serious amateur, the Nikon D50 is perfect. I've used Bronica and Minolta large formats as main studio and... Read full review »

Pros Tons of features, you can grow with it, great image quality
Cons sometimes a bit TOO complex!

This is a going to be a short review of an excellent camera. I've worked with more than few digital cameras in my time, from small megapixels units to some pretty serious stuff. This is one of the most serious cameras that I've worked with. It is considered an "amateur" camera but is more than... Read full review »

Great step up from point & shoot

Pros Sturdy, well balanced, LOOOONG battery life, TONS of features.
Cons None - especially given the price!

This is a truly amazing camera. Let me start by saying that I am a Canon user who has been converted to Nikon by the D50, since it offers basically the same amount of camera as the Canon Rebel XT for about $200 less (6.1 versus 8.0 megapixels, but the difference is really of no concern unless you... Let me first say, that this not a long term review, but based on a personal comparison of the two leading dSLR models in this sub $750 market. I used the D50 for a day and I liked it.

Nikon D50 with 18-55mm lens, this is the camera that Nikon launched to combat the Canon Rebel and if you... Read full review »

We purchased this camera three years ago after extensive research of several comparable digital SLR models. The ratings and reviews we found at that time were excellent, and we discovered a terrific deal on the camera with lens through Amazon.

After taking thousands of photos with this... Read full review »

A good starter DSLR

Cons Single command dial, no built-in wireless, slower AF, no light on top display

A few folks have complained about the focus of my reviews, so let me explain this one. Most folks looking at the D50 will almost certainly be looking at the D70s as well. My review is aimed at that majority.
I bought a D50 for a cousin as a gift and had the chance to test it against my "old"... Read full review »
