Minolta DiMAGE S404

byfisch Aug 4, 2002

Pros Light-weight; easy to use; 4.0 megapixel; reasonably priced.
Cons Touchy mode dial; included AA batteries and 16mb FlashCard a joke.
Recommended it? Yes

The Minolta DiMAGE S404 is an easy to use 4.0 mega pixel digital camera that produces excellent prints when used with the Epson Stylus PHOTO 785EPX.

During a vacation a few months back, I spent some time with my Grandma and her new Kodak digital camera. We had so much fun taking and... Read full review »

Superb camera for the money

byhassled_dad Jun 28, 2002

Pros Great camera and beautiful pix (especially in daylight) for the price
Cons Some peculiarities plus questionable reliability (see afterword)
Recommended it? No

First and of foremost importance, the image quality is really excellent, especially those take in daylight. Flash images are good too, but they don't have the impact of the daylight images. On a computer, you can zoom right in and the images still hold together.

Raw photo too dark or too... Read full review »

Minolta 4 MP with 4X optical zoom takes great looking pics!

bymorasch Sep 19, 2002

Pros Good value for $ with 4MP and 4X optical zoom. Very good optics.
Cons Plastic mode knob turns TOO easily.
Recommended it? Yes

I was looking for a 4 MP or better camera with a decent optical zoom range for less than $500 - so when Minolta came out with the S404 as a new model this Spring (2202), I was practically sold just on the past quality of this brand name alone. This camera met my above criteria, plus having the... Read full review »

This Camera Sucks!

bymrspclayton Dec 7, 2007

Pros NONE
Cons can't take proper pictures
Recommended it? No

I hate this camera. When you want to take a photo, it is either out of batteries or won't take the picture fast enough to catch any action. No matter what settings I put it on, it is never right and I get really crappy pictures.

It is to the point where I am going to use the camera for... Read full review »

Minolta Problems

bywoodewe Dec 5, 2003
6 Helpfuls 7 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros none
Cons Possible avoidance of warranty work by claiming camera was physically damaged.
Recommended it? No

The service provided by Minolta repair is unacceptable. I've had to send the camera back to them twice. Both times they claimed it arrived with physical damaged. If it was, it was not by me. When I asked them to initiate a claim at the Post Office on the first repair, they said, oh well, we will... Read full review »

I found this camera very easy to use 0n the first day I bought it. The following weekend I went to Newport R.I.
While I was on a sailboat in the harbor I just pointed the camera and took pictures. When I returned home, I downloaded the picture,s into my computer and voila, the pictures were... Read full review »

Pros Price is dropping 4 megapixel and good optics. Nice solid metal body
Cons Software with camera Sux - Ended up using Kodak software from 1st camera
Recommended it? Yes

My first camera was the Kodak 4900 4 megapixel - Ok camera but not enough features and it didn't work too well after I dropped it a couple of times. This camera has everything I need - Takes great Auto shots and good manual if you practice and learn the idiosyncracies.Autofocus is a little touchy... Read full review »

Very Nice camera great picture quality versatile as far as conditions. lives up to all of my expectations for a camera at this level. But not a good first camera, more for the intermediate enthusiast. This is not a good beater camera either no good for abusing. Read full review »

Pros Vivid pictures, manual settings, great automated settings, nicely made camera body.
Cons Inability to use additional filters and lenses, short battery life, red eye with flash.
Recommended it? Yes

I purchase this camera in January 04 and have enjoyed its quality since. When you first pick it up it feels like a quality camera. The images are more than I expected and there are enough manual options to satisfy the experienced photographer. It takes stunning low light photos if you use a tripod... Read full review »

Minolta Dimage S404 4MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom

How do you make a good camera even better? With more pixels and more power. Think of Minolta's DiMAGE S404 as a "souped up" S304--there's a new 4-megapixel sensor, plus a faster processor for improved performance, but otherwise, it's virtually the same as their nicely designed 3-megapixel point-and-shoot. An all-glass 7.15-28mm lens (35-140mm in 35mm equivalents) with 4x optical zoom offers more power than the 3x lenses found in most digital cameras. An anomalous dispersion element and twin double-sided aspheric elements work together to minimize chromatic aberrations and reduce curvilinear distortion, giving you crisp, accurate, edge-to-edge imaging. In addition to the optical zoom, the camera includes an additional 2.2x digital zoom. This feature merely crops the edges off your picture and blows up the remaining image, enlarging your picture at the expense of image quality. Most photo-editing software will let you do the same thing to your picture once you've transferred it to your home computer, so it's a camera feature that's not often used. To compose images, watch the 1.8-inch, 122,000-pixel color LCD monitor, or use the optical viewfinder for traditional image composition. For professional results with the point-and-shoot operation of the S404, you can choose from five preset modes: macro, portrait, landscape, night portrait, and text. For more creative shooting, use a wide variety of adjustable features, including manual focus, selectable ISO, custom white-balance controls, exposure compensation and bracketing, and a digital-effects control that allows adjustment of color saturation, contrast, and sharpening. There's also a histogram function, a feature still found primarily on high-end digital cameras. A histogram is a graph displayed on the screen indicating the relative proportions of different levels of brightness in a shot you've taken, instantly letting you know if you've captured your shot with the correct exposure. A movable focus point allows for off-center compositions. Multisegment metering technology helps to provide accurate exposures. Four resolution modes cover the range from film-quality photographs to images for e-mail. Movie mode allows 60 seconds of live action and a voice-memo feature helps identify your work. Four AA batteries power the camera (an optional AC adapter is also available if you're planning to do lots of studio photography). The benefit to using standard AA batteries instead of a custom proprietary battery is that AA batteries are widely available, so missing a once-in-a-lifetime shot due to dead batteries won't be an issue. The downside is that a digital camera will kill a set of alkaline batteries extremely quickly, especially if you're using the camera's LCD display. If you're an occasional photographer, you can get by with high-power disposables, but if you plan to take more than a handful of photos a month, a set of rechargeable batteries (scroll up to the Accessories section) is a virtual necessity. For improved performance, the S404 has a 32 MB internal buffer for temporary storage of images. This improves shot-to-shot speeds and performance in continuous shooting mode. The DiMAGE S404 comes complete with 16 MB CompactFlash card, A/V cable, USB cable, Minolta Image Viewer Utility CD-ROM, four AA alkaline batteries, lens cap, and neck strap. Pros: 4-megapixel sensor captures filmlike detail in your photos Advanced features like shutter- and aperture- priority, plus histograms for more advanced photographers Cons: No connection for external flash Included alkaline batteries are only a short-term solution
