Linksys NSLU2 - Corrupts Files - Avoid at all cost

Pros The NSLU2 does not cost much.
Cons The NSLU2 has much less value than what it costs.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Avoid this network device unless you like to randomly lose data.
I purchased these and the recommended Maxtor disk drives to place data files on the network. After a couple of weeks, one Microsoft Outlook's file (OUTLOOK.PST) was declared corrupt by Outlook. The recommended inbox repair tool, SCANPST.EXE, would not fix the file. On a hunch, I copied the file to a local disk and ran SCANPST.EXE against it. It was fixed, and worked properly with Outlook. The same thing happened with another Outlook file approximately a week later.

With the two failures above, and hours of experience troubleshooting the NSLU2, I contacted Linksys / Cisco. I was told that some files (not identified pre-sale, and not identified now, except for Outlook's .PST files) will be corrupted if they are served by the NSLU2.

Linksys said the only files suitable for the NSLU2 are those loaded onto the disks connected to it, and never changed. In my opinion, this should have been clearly stated in pre-sales promotional material.

Also, I found that if there is a power glitch (the lights dim or flicker) the NSLU2 goes off, and stays off. You cannot access the disks served by the NSLU2 until you go to the device and push the switch on the front. Again, Linksys says this is a feature. They do not plan to offer an option for automatic recovery from power interruption.
