Pros Lots of features that you won't find packaged all together on any other system.
Cons Never completely worked. Best Buy refused to exchange it for a good one.
Recommended it? No

I bought this thing because of all of the great features. IEE1394 inputs in the front, one touch recording from VHS to DVD or visa/versa, writes in multiple formats DVD-R/-RW/ R/ RW DVD-RAM, etc... Multiple inputs etc, etc etc....

Died with a $217+ repair bill

Pros While functioning, the unit produced acceptable VHS to DVD copies.
Cons The unit did not last and required an unrealistic repair cost.
Recommended it? No

The unit was purchased from Best Buy on December 15, 2005 and given to me as a Christmas gift. The DVD side broke shortly after Christmas 2006. I returned it to Best Buy for repair. Just got off the phone with LG and have unfortunately found that the LRY-517 does not display anything higher than 480p due to copy protection!! This is true even when you use the component video connections. BEWARE!

Nowhere on the manual could I find a reference to this gross limitation. Read full review »

Pros Easy to record lot of formats

I have had the same mixed luck. Great machine when it works but frustrating. I recorded lots of shows on one disk which too a long time only to finalize and it not be able to play. Called LG and they said that is true, you can't use Memorex DVD's. Been nice to know that before I recorded 4 or 5... Read full review »

I just bought a LG LRY-517 mid August. Now it is the end of September and the thing has quit working. It will play a DVD and the on screen menu works. But the tuner or VHS movies do not display correctly. It shows like 4 images on the TV.

My unit worked fine for almost a year, then suddenly one day it wouldn't recognize any DVDs, either for recording or for just watching a movie. Pros Multi-format DVD recording. Plays DIVX movies. Plays PAL
Cons Pricey and can be hard to find in retail stores.
Recommended it? Yes

I've owned this unit for over one year now, and it is BY FAR the best audio/video investment I've ever made. The transferring of all my past videotapes to DVD was about as easy as can be.
