The Bottom Line:
Kodak has made printing high quality prints easy and affordable for the home user, as long as you don't get carried away.
Last year my oldest daughter wanted a digital camera for her birthday. When I considered that, I debated what to do about printing them. On the computer for our kids we had a Canon printer that was about five years old and which wasn't that great quality. She could send some of them out to be picked up or sent to the home, but that would take away the thrill of being able to print the pictures she'd taken right away. Since I was purchasing a simple but high quality camera for her from Kodak, I decided to purchase the Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock with Thermal Transfer to go along with that.
The Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock was small and easy to set up. It fits nicely right on top of the desk where the kids have their computer without interfering with the keyboard or mouse. Setting it up was very easy. I had to do it for them since I don't trust any of the kids to even download a program and not screw it up, but it's possible they could have handled this on their own. The cartridge fits easily into the side of the printer. The printer gets plugged into a power source, and then I loaded the software CD into the computer. At the time I was prompted I connected the Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock to the computer using the USB cable I purchased separately.
For anyone who wants to have a digital camera and who doesn't want to be bogged down with a computer (my parents come to mind ) the Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock can be used with a Kodak EasyShare Camera and not have to be hooked up to the computer.
The dock on the top of the printer holds a Kodak EasyShare Camera. A universal insert is included so all of the cameras in Kodak's EasyShare line will fit snugly. This not only allows me to print pictures from the camera, but charges the camera as well. It makes a terrific place to store the camera when not in use.
Since we use a computer, once we've placed the camera on the Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock, we download the pictures to the computer and then select any that we want to print. The pictures transfer with the push of one button, making it almost foolproof for my daughter to use. If you're not using it with a computer, you can review the photos on the screen on the back of the camera and select which ones to print that way.
Right from the start, I was extremely impressed with the picture quality. I have shied away from digital cameras and printing photos due to my fussiness over the quality of the end product. This was especially true when it came to printing out pictures. I usually ended up sending any digital prints off somewhere to be developed and then waited for them to come to me. The Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock was great right from the start.
It took about a minute and a half to print one picture. The colors were bright and vivid. The images were some of the sharpest I've ever seen come from a digital camera. Recently we tried printing out pictures from a Polaroid digital camera using the Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock. I could really see the difference in the quality of the camera used when I did this. The pictures weren't as crisp and the colors not as vivid as I had seen before.
The Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock will print up to a 4x6-inch print without a border on it. This is a really nice size. It can also print a 3x4-inch size, 2x3-inch size, and 1.3x2-inch size. The software on the computer prompted us for what size would produce the best quality prints, even on the photos we shot using the other digital camera.
The replacement cartridges on the Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock aren't cheap and range from about $15 to about $40. The most expensive one touts that it is good for 160 prints – we haven't put that to the test just yet. That wouldn't be too bad at about $0.25 per print compared to the $0.19 per print I pay when I send them out to be printed, except that you have to add the paper cost to it as well. The cartridge puts a coating on each print to make it waterproof and help the colors last.
The Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock comes with a 1 year limited warranty as well. This is good because we've knocked it around a bit and it still has worked just fine. I knocked it off real good the other night when I was setting up the new printer I finally bought and I thought that would be the end of it. A test picture printed out just fine though.
I am really pleased with this product from Kodak. It has given me optimism for affordable and high-quality digital printing in the home. It's simple for my kids to use and manage their photos along with providing a place to keep the camera that it won't get lost. I'm not too sure if it would be too complicated for my parents yet to manage, but it most certainly is a step in the right direction. I would even feel confident printing out my own pictures on this printer, and I am the one who is being dragged kicking and screaming into the era of digital technology.
