The Bottom Line:
This is a good camera for the casual picture taker.
The Kodak EasyShare 813 Digital Camera was a gift for my daughter. I have to say that I played with it quite a lot before I gave it to her and several times since. I wanted to make sure that it was a decent camera before I gave it as a gift to my 10 year old. I have also used it to take pictures when I have not been able to locate my own camera. On all occasions, I have found that the pictures taken by this camera are more than acceptable and I am pleased with the camera overall.
Features
The Kodak C813 camera is a nice small camera and fits easily into ones hand. It fits into my pocket or my purse so it is easy to take along to almost anywhere! It measures about 3.5 x 2.5 inches by about an inch thick. The camera has 8.2 megapixels and 5x digital zoom
The camera is simple to operate. The back of the camera has a 2.5 inch screen and several buttons. The screen is large enough to be able to decently view the photos you are going to take and then the finished photos. The buttons allow you to access the menu, review and delete you photos as well as zoom into your photos, both before and after you have taken them.
There are a few more buttons on the top of the camera. One feature that is on this camera that is not on earlier models is an on/off button. On the earlier model that I have, you simple turn the dial to the setting you want to turn the camera on but on this model, there is an actual button. I’m not sure if it is an actual advantage or not as I’ve never had a problem without it! Still, my daughter, who actually uses the camera the most, thinks that it is a good thing to have. There is also a button on the top of the camera to turn on and off the flash function. This is important only if you want to override the automatic detection feature. My daughter is not an experienced photographer and keeps the camera set so that the flash automatically flashes when it deems it necessary to do so. This has always worked out just fine for her and for me when I have used it as well.
The other button on the top of the camera is a dial as well as a button. The button is pressed for capturing the photos. The dial can be turned to a variety of settings based on the type of picture you wish to take. The settings available are: night landscape, close up, digital photo stabilization, auto (general), and video.
Video
This camera is capable of taking video footage. My daughter and I have both taken video of 30 seconds to one minute in length and found the quality to be quite good. You do have to be careful to hold the camera relatively still while taking video but I think that this is true with most cameras. In addition, upon playback on the camera itself, the video seems to have no sound. However, once the video is downloaded onto a computer, there is decent sound quality. Basically, the camera has no speaker on which to playback sound but it does have the microphone to capture it. Taking video does take up a lot of memory space on the camera or memory card.
Memory
The camera has 16 MB of internal memory. In my experience, this is enough memory to take about 20-24 photos. It really is not sufficient to take video unless you are only taking a very short, say several seconds, of video footage. The camera, however, has a slot of an SD memory card. I purchased a 1GB card for this camera and with such, I can take around 500 pictures and plenty of video. It seems like plenty of memory for my needs however, if you feel that you will need much more than that, be aware that you can basically only buy up to a 2GB card. Anything bigger than that is not compatible with this camera. But, like I said, the 1GB holds plenty and I simply download photos to my computer, delete the card and start over again and it works our very well for us!
What I would change
The one thing that I would change about this camera is the fact that it does not have an actual viewfinder. I have never seen a camera without a viewfinder until I used this one. So, you must simply use the image you see on the screen when you are going to capture a picture. This doesn’t sound bad but sometimes,, especially when you are in bright sunlight, it is hard to see the screen and a viewfinder would be a helpful addition.
Batteries
This camera uses 2 AA batteries. I have found that the battery life is decent. I’m sure it could always be better but I have found that I can take over 100 photos, with flash, before I have to replace the batteries. One thing I have done to minimize cost is to use rechargeable batteries. I have a charger and 4 batteries. While one set of 2 batteries is in the camera, I plug in the charger with the other 2 and then I always have a freshly charged set to use.
Recommendations
This is a great little camera. I have found that the pictures are of decent quality and it is very easy to use. In addition, the camera only cost around $80 so that was a positive in my book. Since this was a gift for my daughter, I had to take into account that she was not necessarily going to be easy on the camera (i.e. I knew she’d accidentally drop it) or that she might lose it so I didn’t want to spend a fortune. Even though it has been dropped a few times (never too badly), this camera has done it’s job and has turned out to be just great! I would recommend this camera for casual picture takers and/or pre-teen/teen photo enthusiasts!
