Good PDA, but it still has a few bugs to work out
Pros
Ease of use, great screen, excellent wireless capabilities and good sound quality
Cons
Avant Go doesn't work well, too many soft resets, Internet Explorer is unstable
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
It's a reliable, easy to use PDA with some very interesting and useful functions
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I am an attorney and keeping and accurate calendar is extremely important in my line of work. I need something small and will reliably sync with the two computers I use (laptop for work, desktop for the house). My first PDA was an HP Jornada 768 that I bought right after the HP/Compaq merger. My new iPaq was a Christmas gift from my in-laws.
TECHNICAL SPECS PER HP:
•
Samsung S3C 2440 processor,300MHz (seems pretty fast and powerful)
•
Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC, Professional Second Edition
•
Full Pocket PC functionality
•
Up to 56MB user-accessible memory (no other memory included)
•
Bluetooth wireless technology, WLAN 802.11b, IrDA, USB
•
3.5" transflective TFT screen with portrait, landscape modes
•
SD slot
•
HP Image Zone
•
Wi-Fi playback, control for music, photos, videos
•
Remote, headphones
Available accessories include: desktop cradle, auto adapter kit, extended life battery, 1.3 MP Photosmart camera, Bluetooth Foldable Keyboard, (useful if you don't want to lug around a laptop), Navigation System with Bluetooth GPS Receiver ($329!), TuneCast II Mobile FM Transmitter (plays MP3 files on a stereo).
I recommend the aluminum case from Rhine Skin.
It also plays most common multimedia files and has 56 MB of user memory.
WHAT I LIKE:
- It is very small, which is important when you carry your PDA around all the time like me.
- Beautiful display - There is just no comparison between this and the Palms that I have seen
- Wireless capabilities: This thing is pretty good at finding wireless hotspots and tell you about them. I have wireless networks at home and the office and the NEVO server software allows me to stream audio, video and look at pictures over my wireless connection. MSN Messenger seems to work find and I can access my Yahoo email with no problem. The 802.11b seems adequate enough for most of my basic web browsing needs: check email, weather, travel notices. I have been able to connect to a Starbucks hotspot with no problem, but 10 cents a minute is rather steep.
- Universal remote. This is strictly a feature for a gadget freak, but it works for me. I've been successful at programming my iPAQ to run all of my electronics devices in the house. Parents with young children might find this feature useful when they can't find the regular remotes. It's also pretty funny to take into a sports bar and change the TV channels.
- Pictures, Video & Audio. The degree of utility of the multimedia features will depend on your willingness to use them. The onboard memory is definitely not adequate for more thatn a couple of pictures or songs. Video playback is adequate and the sound is suprisingly good. I can listen to music and check email at the same time.
- Included software - Have pocker versions of Word and Excel is particularly useful if you have a keyboard. The NEVO served is needed to stream audio and video over a network. There is whole of other software included: Avant Go (for news and reading interesting stuff offline), HP Image zone, Microsoft Pocket Messenger and Explorer.
- Decent Battery life: I've gotten 2-3 days of heavy use out of this thing, but keep the charger handy.
THINGS I DON'T LIKE:
- The OS is a little unstable. Sometimes I need to do a soft resent 2-3 times a day. Sometimes I can't even sync or charger w/o a soft resent. They are already working on their second ROM upgrade for this thing.
- Pocket Internet Explorer. There are times where Explorer will simply not like a web site that I want to browse and shut down w/o warning. Tech support advises that they are aware of the problem and should have a ROM update in the next week or so to address the issue.
- Avant Go - every since upgrading to ActiveSync 3.8 and the latest Avant Go software, I cannot sync my Avant Go pages properly. I am still troubleshooting this one and will update my review when I have figured out the problem.
- Inadequate memory - Although it comes with 56 MB of user memory, that's only enough for a few songs or pictures. Sometimes the limited memory can cause problems with the audio streaming. For the price, I would have thought it would have come with as least a 128MB SD card, but they chose not to include one.
Overall, I am pleased with the performance of my iPAQ 3115. The frequent soft resets are very annoying, but I am satisfied with the sounds quality and easy to read screen. And of course, it comes in handy when my 7-year-old daughter loses another remote control. But the most important that is that flawlessly syncs with Outlook so I can keep my calendar, task list and contacts up to date.
Update: Since I originally wrote this review, HP issued a firmware update that seems to have addressed the bugs regardign the excessive soft recess and constant crashing of Internet explorer. The memory card slot is a little unsecure, so you stand a good chance of losing your SD card if you drop this PDA.
