The Choice Printer for Portable Digital Photography

Pros Portable, basic editing features, bluetooth, accepts most all digital camera memory cards.
Cons Photos not waterproof.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I recommend this printer for it's ease of use, quality of photos, and attractive design.
Portable photo printers often cost more than desktop printers that can print, copy, and scan and still do photos, but remain stationary. So why purchase a portable photo printer? Because we all live in a material world and we're a material girl! Of course portability has it's benefits and I recommend one of these printers only to those who will actually benefit from it's small size or portability. Here's the run down on the HP 385 Go-Go printer and why I personally think it's the best-in-class as far as portable photo printers go.

Printing Photos:
Printing photos is very simple on this machine. Turn the machine on, insert your digital camera's memory card (or use the PictBridge port) scroll through the photos and select the one you would like to print, and hit the print button.

You can do basic editing on this printer without the use of a computer. Editing features include red-eye removal, zoom/crop, black and white photos, antique photos, and a few others such as contrast and 'chose quality'.

This printer accepts CompactFlash Type I and II, SmartMedia, Secure Digital/MultiMedia Card, Memory Stick, and xD memory cards. It also supports Memory Stick Dou and mini SD if you have an adapter. The quality of the photos themselves largely depend on the camera you are using (at least 3 megapixels is recommended for 4x6 photos). Assuming you have a decent camera, you can expect good prints from this machine. Better than Wal-Mart? Yes.

The color quality with the HP Vivera inks is fantastic and are supposed to be fade resistant (not proof) for 80 years. They will also be water resistant and smudge resistant. The photos also display a good clarity and crispness and the colors true-to-life. Cost per photo will be between 24 cents to 29 cents with the HP Ink/Paper Combo packs, or around 40 cents without. The HP Ink/Paper Combo packs contain both the color ink cartridge and 4x6 photo paper for a much lower price than you would pay buying them individually. These packs will give you the lowest cost per photo. An ink cartridge will last anywhere from 100 to 200 photos, depending on the color distribution for each photo.

Exterior Design/ Portability:
The printer has an attractive design, not near as bulky as the Epson or Canon models. It has a very light grey color and folds up nicely for easy storage. There is no carrying handle, but there is a case available for seperate purchase at around $30 (similar in design to a digital camera carrying case). Dimensions are (w/d/h)/weight) 8.7/4.6/4.5in, 2.6 lbs., or 8.7/8.75/6.54in when printing.
The printer has a 2.5 inch flip-up display screen to view/edit photos. The printer comes with a power cord, but to print photos on the go you have to have the optional $80 rechargeable battery which will print about 75 photos per charge.

What I like about this printer:
The quality of the photos is great and the portability is kind of nice too. All basic editing is done without a computer. More convenient than outsourcing. I've had no problems with paper jams in this machine so far.

What I do not like:
Pictures occasionaly come out curled or wavy (usually pictures with a lot of dark, dark blue. Also, the pictures are not waterproof. The Epson Picturemate offers waterproof photos but color quality on the photos aren't that great with the Picturemate.

In a nutshell:
Do-it-yourself photo printing is a lot of fun with this printer. The practical value makes this digital photo printer a must have for those who go on trips, children's games, or just want a tiny printing solution for their home. Thank you for reading this review of the HP 385 Photo Printer.
