The Bottom Line:
If you like to listen to music while you work, scan web pages frequently, or do any kind of digital editing -- it's a must have.
Had one of these for years and recently bought a new one for a new computer. It's one of those subtle enchancements that doesn't seem like a necessity at first, but once you start using it you can't imagine a Mac without one.
It's basically a big knob that sets on your desk and plugs into the USB port. It's well machined and heavy with smooth motion. You can also click the knob to send a mouse down or other programmable command. The knob has an alien like blue light that comes out from under it.
Setup is easy. Just plug and play. Most apps work with it right out of the box. If you're doing video or sound editing, it's kind of a must have. But I find myself using it mostly to have easy access to volume control and for browsing the Internet.
When you're listening to iTunes some tracks are recorded at a higher volume that others. If you like playing music whie you work, it can be a pain to keep adjusting volume. I like to be able to just click on the desktop and then roll the PowerMate to give me precise and easy control of the Macintosh volume.
I read a lot of articles online (for pleasure and work). The PowerMate can also be used to scroll a web browser. It gives you easy, comfortable control over your position in a webpage whether you have to jump up to the top to check a data point or just scroll lazily through the latest tech review.
Bottom line, when I bought my new Mac I made sure I had a keyboard, mouse, and PowerMate before I left the store.
