There are reasons why nightmares happen in the dark..

byjbrd Jan 11, 2007
Pros The meat, potatoes, side-dish and the dessert!
Cons Story needs some explaining, single campaign is short, no replay value.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This will probably win every videogame award that it is capable of winning.
I do not want to sound like a prick. I do not want to sound like a bastard. But I must tell you the truth. So here it goes: Gears Of War is fun as hell and whoever that doesn't have it...should well, let's say you'll be missing out on a lot! Gears Of War has been highly anticipated over the year and a half and now it's out. Yeah, I'm late at this, but my opinion makes no one damn difference because everyone loves this game. So go out in the dark and have a nightmare!

Believe It Or Not, But Gears Of War Does Have Flaws!
I might as well as getting the complaints out of the way because there aren't that many. The story is probably one every complaint list. Why? Because Gears Of War obviously HATES to tell its story. All I got out of it was that locusts are out from the underground and you are part of this team whom must stop the "breeding" from underground to save the world. Second, the single-player campaign is deep enough for the $60, but it's still a tad short for the price. Even if you beat the lengthy campaign, you still have the multiplayer and Xbox Live, but there is no real reason to go back to play this game. Okay, so that is out of the way, let's move on to the rest of the game that every cherishes.

The Meat:
Gears Of War is all about survival and lots of shooting. That is the "meat" of the game if you would say that. As soon as you step into this game, you must be on your toes at all times because if you are not careful, you will fail and quite possibly die. You'll have to take much use of taking cover for survival. Taking cover is essential to survival, you can mantle over the obstacle, evade, cover slip, SWAT turn and roadie run(which makes you harder to target as you run for cover). Let's not forget the "big guns". You don't have a very big selection, but one look at what they can do, it's what they do counts. You have a Snub pistol, shotgun, sniper rifle, grenades of course and two really awesome guns called Hammer of Dawn and Launcher Assault Rifle. The Hammer of Dawn is a satellite beam weapon that is capable of leveling buildings and some of your tougher enemies. The Assault Rifle has a really cool feature; it has a chainsaw on it and you can get close to an enemy and..well, you know what happens next I'm sure.

The Potatoes:
Of course, we can't have meat without potatoes, can we? With your team, you can give them commands. You can only give them three commands; regroup, defense and attack. I actually found this not interesting enough to use it more than I needed to which wasn't often at all. However, it's here if you need it. Much like Halo, there is no health packs scattered around this hellish nightmare. When you are hit, a read gear will appear in the middle of the screen. If you keep getting hit, it'll get redder and if you let it, you'll die. Take cover and recover from your injuries which will not take long. If your squad gets hurt, you can go by his side to heal with a press of a button. Hey! Where is mine! Taking much from Resident Evil 4, the targeting system is very simple and easy. The camera is usually over your shoulder when you are aiming, but you don't press the aiming button, the camera is at your back and what you're intending to hit will probably not get hit! If you are covering, you can blind fire which you can just wave the gun to the direction of gun fire and you won't get injured. However, this is almost every time inaccurate. Of course, you have the chainsaw melee attack that I told you about, but if you pick up another gun and leave that bad boy behind, you can still do a melee attack which is a less powerful punch to the head with the weapon.

The side-dish:
During your fight for mankind and kicking locust's a$$, there are times in the game where you'll be either driving and/or manning the turret gun. Here for an example, you'll be driving through this once-alive town trying to get to the other side while fighting off locust bats by shedding light on them to fry their butts! These are a nice distraction from the run-cover-shoot game-play. Just when that game-play is getting repetitive, here comes the side-dish! When you finish the single-player, you can go back to the Co-OP and multiplayer.

The Dessert:
The favorite part of any meal! This is the part everyone loves, or should love. The graphics of course are the very best the 360 has put out thus far. The character models are much reminded of the game, Condemned, but a little better. The frame-rate is excellent, lots of enemies are on-screen and within the chaos of it all, the game runs smooth. The detail in the buildings and everything you see in the game is genius! The rain effects are perfect down to the last drop! The dust from buildings falling is chaotic. The atmosphere is just excellent; Much of Gears Of War looks like it was shot on location in Iraq(Xbox Magazine) Definitely Gears Of War deserves the Best Graphics in a Videogame award. Why? Well, see for yourself! Gears Of War does take a few minutes for its' user to get used to the controls, but after you get used to them, it's smooth sailing! This is the second game that I have played on the Xbox 360 that has controls that play this good! Extremely easy layout and with just a flick of a button, you'll be tearing into some locust a$$!

Gears Of War has a lot going for it. The game-play is a sheer piece of brilliant gaming history, the graphics are the best yet to come and the controls are easy to use and intuitive. It's a shame it doesn't deserve a better rating from me because of it's lazy a$$ not telling a decent story..wait, for not telling us a story! The single campaign is short(again, it's still long enough for the price) and you still have the Co-OP and multiplayer to come back to, but if you want something more, there is no replay value unless you want to unlock the Xbox 360 Achievements. Plain and simple: Gears Of War ultimately accomplishes what it came to do. It will make the players have fun while kicking locusts' a$$ in a very chaotic virtual world about survival and sticking to your guns because they are your best friends in this game.
