Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This camera is a upgrade from a true point-and-shoot style. If you want more control of the quality of the pictures you take, this one's for you.
I purchased this camera after looking for one that had more options than my previous point and shoot camera. I have had it for only a week, but so far have taken close to a thousand pictures. Here is what I found:

1. Image Features- The camera is not intended to be used as a true point and shoot. When I first recieved the camera, I took several pictures using the auto setting. They looked okay on the lcd screen, but when I uploaded them to the computer, the pictures where all out of focus. I found that you have to hold the button half way down, to auto focus, and then press the rest of the way down to take a great picture. Another great feature is the micro and super-micro mode. This allows you to take very close up pictures. I took a picture of an ant at about 2 cm, and it came out amazing. This feature really shines when you take close up of flowers. You will be amazed! I also liked the panoramic mode. This allows you to take a succession of 3 photos and helps you to line them all up to take a great panoramic shot. This too is truly amazing! I tested it in my room. I started from the left hand wall, to the center, and then to the right. It shows you a shadow of the last picture that you line up with the next view. Truly amazing feature.

2. ***Read the manual*** Okay, so I then proceeded to do things right. I read the manual, and found there are so many options to make the picture come out how you'd like. I quickly discovered that, unlike my previous point and shoot, the auto focus feature has to be turned on. I really liked that when I turned it on, a logo showed on the lcd screen to let me know if the picture is not in focus. It is very important that if you truly want to get the most out of this camera, you read the manual. There are so many things this camera can do, especially if you are used to true point and shoot cameras as I was.

3. The outer case is very durable. It is a very nice size also. It fits perfectly in my hands, and does not feel flimsy. The outer shell feels rubberized and so gives you the feel of control. It also has a nice grip that I found allows you to take photos and controls using only one hand. It may be hard for left-handers to use, because all of the controls seem to be right oriented. The camera is also not as big as I thought it would be. To my surprise it was quite small. The lens cap is rather loose (as you may have read in other reviews), but I liked that because it comes off easily if you happen to turn it on and forget to remove the lens cap. It is best if you use the lens cap tether that comes with the camera.

4. LCD screen and viewfinder- the screen is really big, it allows you to see a lot of the scenery. Again, I tested it out in the mountains and it surpassed my expectations. I really like that you can adjust the brightness in one touch from the back controls. It held up really well in light too. Usually, the lcd washes out in bright light.
Another option, which I really love, is the addition of the viewfinder. Modern camera's usually delete this feature. What amazed me is that the viewfinder is acually a digital mini screen when you look through it. I really like the fact that you can use this feature when you yearn for that traditional feel.

5. Picture quality. Okay, 10 Megapixels is an amazing quality. I was amazed at how crisp and colorful the quality of the pictures were. It does take some practice in using the numerous settings, but is well worth the time.

6. Battery Power- The camera takes 4 AA batteries, but last a long time. I used the ones that came with the camera for over 400 pictures, while reviewing the pictures onboard, and lcd screen on most of the time. The batteries where only rated for about 150 pics or so, but lasted so much more. I like that I can buy rechargeables, ot just go into any store to pick up a dozen or so more.

7. Storage- Like most camera's, the storage is minimal onboard. I bought a 4 GB card for about 20 bucks. It read on the camera that I could take about 1600 pictures on that one card. WOW!

There are many more features, like video recording, that I haven't yet tested, but I am amazed with what I have seen so far. I would buy this camera if you are interested in getting into amateur photography, but don't want the expense. I've recently seen this camera around 200 bucks. I am really looking forward to the holidays, taking my camera out and preserving the memories in crisp, vivid photos.
