The Etymotic ER4P is the newest addition to the fine line of earphones from Etymotic. They are designed to be more efficient than the ER4S so that portable players can drive them to decent listening levels. Portable players have notoriously weak outputs causing high impedance/high sensitivity headphones to sound thin and lifeless. Without an amp, the ER4P is the ticket.
Utilizing the same drivers as the ER4S, the ER4P has a different equalization circuit. The impedance is 27 ohms and delivers 108dB SPL with .25v input. The highs are slightly rolled off giving the appearance of more bass. This can be quite beneficial as most portable players tend to be a bit bright sounding anyway. Relative to the ER4S the highs are slightly veiled, mids about the same and a bit more bass. 23 - 25dB of isolation is achieved with use of either tip provided. Custom molds can be purchased separately from Westone Labs or EarMold Design. This insures comfort if the supplied tips don't fit right.
A new cable is being used on the ER4P - it is softer and less microphonic. Though not perfect it is quieter than the older cable used on Etymotics other models. Changing the cable of your ER4S with this cable makes your earphones an ER4P. The equalization circuit is in the barrel where the left and right cable split to each ear. So, the cable and circuit are THE difference between the two headphones.
If you never plan on using a portable amp and just want to run the earphones out of a portable player whether it be a CD, Mini Disc, MP3 or DAT, these are the way to go. For home or amplifier use the ER4S is more accurate and recommended. Either way you will be a happy camper.
The ER4P also comes with the full compliment of accessories - carrying pouch, shirt clip, 1/4" adapter, 3 pr of white eartips, 5 pr of black foam tips, Green filter changing tool and 2 pr of filters ( be careful not to lose them when opening the cylinder!).
