Etymotic ER-4P MicroPro™ Headphones

The Etymotic ER4B is the most specialized of Etymotics 3 ear phones. Designed to work with binaural recordings, their equalization circuit compensates for the rolled off high frequencies lost due to the binaural process. These recordings use a dummy head with microphones in the ears to record the correct time delays, pinna reflections and notch frequencies to capture the exact sound that each ear would normally hear. The diffuse field effect is then already applied to the recording. This headphone is actually reproducing these recordings with great accuracy. The problem is that very few recordings are made using the binaural method and the recordings are only effective with headphones.
So the ER4B has very limited use. Binaural engineers or owners of many binaural recordings would be prime candidates. They are a joy to listen to in binaural settings. With normal stereo recordings the ER4B sounds very bright. Someone with high frequency hearing loss may also appreciate these.
They come with all the normal Etymotic package - white tips, black foam tips, green filter changing tool w/ 4 green filters, shirt clip and 1/4 inch adapter all packaged nicely in a sturdy plastic box. The headphones have a 5 ft cable.
Their excellence for binaural recordings is unrivaled. The flat diffuse field response makes them as accurate as a headphone can get for this application. Unfortunately the limited selection of music makes these a rare purchase and for only the most critical listener.
These ear plug headphones go deep into the ear canal so comfort can be an issue. They work fine in my ears - no discomfort. The two ear plug types allow for a comfortable choice.
