Decent scanner at a nice price

Pros Nice functionality for what I paid
Cons having a printer and scanner takes up a lot of room
Recommended it? Yes

My previous scanner had worn itself out, with quotes for fixing it well over $100.

My scanner doesn't get a lot of use, particularly with an ability to print to .PDF, but It's still helpful for scanning and emailing signed documents and scanning various musical items and collectibles that... Read full review »

Repair the Epson 4180 Flatbed Scanner Yourself

bytucsonfixitman May 26, 2007
11 Helpfuls 12 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Easily fixed by someone with basic handyperson skills.
Cons Epson really should buy the two screws required to fix this thing permanently. 5 cents?
Recommended it? No

Here is how to repair the broken pully mount: Read completely before beginning.

Tools and parts needed: Small phillips screwdriver, 2 small flat-head screws (self-tapping pan-head with a head that is 1/4" in diameter and shank 3/8" long will work well.)

1. Disconnect scanner... Read full review »

Excellent scans, long learning curve

byalagoroad Jan 4, 2005
9 Helpfuls 10 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Very good scans. Comes with Photoshop elements version 2
Cons Confusing and inadequate instructions, long learning curve.
Recommended it? Yes

I have started to use this scanner to get old slides into my computer and it gives very good results once one has figured it out. But the instructions are very inadequate. The software wanted to crop important parts of the slides out. I eventually stumbled on how to do it, but something this basic... Read full review »

Good scanner

bychwebb1 Jul 11, 2008
8 Helpfuls 9 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Good scan quality, transparent material scanning
Cons Noisy
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this scanner refurbished 3 years ago, and it's still going strong. I have used this scanner for negatives, positives, and standard reflective media, and this scanner does well with whatever media you throw at it. The front buttons work in the Mac OS, unlike some other scanners I have seen... Read full review »

8 Helpfuls 9 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Ability to reproduce digital pictures from B&W and Colour negatives. Reasonable price for...
Cons None
Recommended it? Yes

I purchased this particular scanner specifically for reproducing family photographs, and especially from film negatives where the original photograph was no longer available or had become lost/destroyed/given away.

The scanner does a fabulous job and in most cases, the scanned image of a... Read full review »

Mine broke also

bymemoryquilter Feb 16, 2006
5 Helpfuls 6 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Did nice scans of photos.
Cons Didn't last very long
Recommended it? No

I have only had it for 6 months. Used it when I first got it - it sat on a shelf and then when I went to use it recently and it just makes noises - no arm movement. Warranty service is available - if you ship it at your cost in the original box - or take it to the limited authorized service. The... Read full review »

Good scans but unreliable

bydenas_dad Mar 8, 2007
4 Helpfuls 5 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Good quality scans
Cons Unreliable
Recommended it? No

After about 100 scans over a 1.5 year period the drive mechanism for the print head broke. The scans were pretty good but I would not buy another one. I purchased a Canon 8600F as a replacement and it is head and shoulders over the 4180. Read full review »

Quality, Speed, great software

byrmhealy Sep 14, 2004
6 Helpfuls 7 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Excellent software, speed and high resolution
Cons Completely inadequate documentation
Recommended it? No

The perfection 4180 photo comes with impressive photo editing software, solid OCR to WP programs and reasonable speed. As with all Epson scanners, the quality of the hardware and its performance is perfection.
There is however one serious downside. It comes without a manual; important... Read full review »

Worked great until it BUSTED

bybelisa_man Jul 19, 2006

Pros Prior to the hardware busting, it produced great quality scans.
Cons cheap hardware, software takes some getting used to.
Recommended it? No

The scanner sat on my desktop virtually unused for about a year. When I finally did start to use it consistently for a 2 week period, one of the plastic pins holding the pulley popped and broke. Really disappointing considering I paid top price for it and only got about 3 weeks total use out of it... Read full review »

Great Scanner but weak parts.

bybenny314 Aug 5, 2005
3 Helpfuls 4 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Does very good job on old slides and photos.
Cons Be careful. The brackets that hold the belt pulley break very easy. Poor design.
Recommended it? Yes

This scanner does a great job on slides, documents, photos, etc. I give it a high rating on performance. However, it has been in my home on a table every since I bought it and hasn't moved. When I tried to use it today the red light came on indicating a hardware problem. Looking down through the... Read full review »
