Near-professional imaging at a great price.

Pros Excellent image quality in most situations, compatible with several media, good customer...
Cons 3200 spi scans are time-consuming, slide scans show optical limitations.
Recommended it? Yes

For years, I've been searching for an inexpensive way to scan 35mm slides. I had come to the conclusion that this doesn't exist. I've always had access to film scanners in university settings, so it's never been a big problem. I knew someday that I might need to buy my own, and that time finally... Read full review »

Pros Near perfect scans of prints and negatives at a great price.
Cons It is difficult to achieve a "Perfect" match from original scan to print.
Recommended it? Yes

I was fed up with my old HP 5200C scanjet scanner and I wanted a good quality scanner that would scan both photos and negatives. I also wanted an affordable price. I was very pleased when I came across the Epson Perfection 3170. This was the best out of a series of Epson Perfection scanners, and... Read full review »

Pros Good quality negative scans for a small outlay. Nice piece of hardware.
Cons Supplied software inadequate for serious use. USB 2.0 works incorrectly.
Recommended it? Yes

Summary:

The Epson Perfection 3170 flatbed scanner has worked well as a photo scanner, negative scanner, and printed photo scanner. The scanning hardware is very good for a consumer device. The resolution and color gamut are top notch in its price class. I can recommend this scanner for... Read full review »

Pros Good reviews on epinion/amazon/pricegrabber
Cons Drivers don't work for me (and others)
Recommended it? No

Don't want to get into all the details here but suffice it to say I have spent about 12 hours trying to get the bundled software to recognize the twain driver. Third party software vuesoft and silverfree work fine. A search of newsgroups and photo sites shows that I am not the only one with this... Read full review »

Big Hardware flaws and poor support from Epson

byTerryMelby Jul 21, 2005
10 Helpfuls 11 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Good color capture. Easy to use.
Cons Lines, shadows created by faulty hardware. World's worst tech support.
Recommended it? No

I made the mistake of buying another Epson product after my last support fiasco with one of their printers. First I have to admit this is a re-furb, but with a full warranty that I purchased direct from Epson. It arrived with big smudge on the underside of the scanning glass. Epson's response - a... Comments and evaluation concerning Epson Scanner 3170 submitted to DealTime web site.

I recently purchased this scanner from Circuit City after having studied several evaluations of mostly HP and Epson products.

The 3170 shows to be Mac compatible but I found... Read full review »

Pros Easy setup, good instructions, software, excellent quality scans, price/value ratio seems...
Cons None

I just received the 3170 yesterday evening and wasted no time in setting it up and making some scans. Very easy setup and clear directions. The transformer is the type that has an AC cord that plugs into the transformer, then has a cord that connects to the scanner - nice because it doesn't have a... Read full review »

Pros Price, Array of Film Holders
Cons Faulty Unit, Poor Service
Recommended it? No

I purchased this scanner at the end of June specifically to scan film. After inheriting a couple of medium format cameras I was looking for an inexpensive alternative to getting proofs made of each roll. The Epson 3170 had good reviews and it came with a MF film holder, so it was a logical choice... Read full review »

Pros Great resolution. Easy for this first-timer to set up and use. Price was right.
Cons Automatic mode failed to detect some tiny details in slides. Required use of Manual Scan.
Recommended it? Yes

Although I've used computers for many years, I waited to buy my first scanner until I started cataloguing and digitizing literally a lifetime (decades) of slides and print photos. I opted for the Epson 3170, mainly because of the glowing reviews at this website. Because my collection is split... Read full review »

Sophisticated scanner -best for bulk scanning

byshibbo1eth Jan 3, 2004

Pros Powerful, allows scanning of negatives and slides. Came with Photoshop Elements program...
Cons More power than average user needs. For home use, Epson's 2400 is sufficient.
Recommended it? Yes

I got this scanner when I started a family photo archive project. The Epson 2400 was actually recommended to me first. But when I went to the store, I saw this scanner on sale right next to the 2400. I thought, "Hey, this 3170 gets a much higher resolution than the 2400. I should get better scans... Read full review »
