This is my fourth webcam purchase. I was sold on the Logitech name, and I've had good experience in the past with their products. This is in theory the Cadillac of webcams.
Its so...Big?
I was actually surprised at the size of this thing, as my other cameras are much smaller. Picture a roll of Half Dollars if you're old enough to know what a Half-Dollar looks like. If not, its the same size as a Twinkie.
Don't Get Stuck in the Dark
Logitech also offers great support on their site, and I was able to upgrade to the latest version of the software. The picture on this camera is outstanding once you get it adjusted. The software has a tendency to auto-correct to a very dark setting, but this is easily resolved in the camera settings on the software. You can brighten it right up, and the color accuracy is excellent as well. This appears to be the biggest gripe with the old software, but the kinks are now out.
Now I remember why I paid $120
The picture is crystal clear, and if you've purchase other webcams, the difference is fairly obvious. You really notice it on the other end. I purchased this one for my home, and use a Logitech Notebook Cam on the road. I can really see the results. Keep in mind that any camera is better given more white light, so don't think this will work any better in an unlit room.
Usable Features, Interoperability, and Goofy Toys
I use it with YIM, AIM, MSN & Skype. I have noticed that the software has a few things that I do use, and many that I don't. I don't use the face tracking, and haven't tried the software that makes your head look like a talking shark. Great if you're 8 years old, but silly at 38.
Its big, but shouldn't you look great on the Web?
I like to keep my reviews short, so here's the basics. Upgrade the drivers & software immediately on the Logitech website. Install this new software before you plug in the camera. Check the camera settings before you decide it is "dark." Expect it to be a great home use camera that is a little bulky for road use. The picture quality is what you are paying your premium dollars to purchase.
Updates
After having this thing for a few months, it does seem to have some quirks. The darkness thing can be a bit annoying, as the software doesn't seem to adjust properly when you are shooting from shadows, into a lighted space. I have my camera on top of my monitor, and under a shelving overhang, so the camera is in the dark, but I am in the light which drives the software nuts.
So everytime you reboot your machine, you sort of "lose" your settings. I correct this on the software using the gears/settings tab which takes you to webcam settings. There are five tabs there. The middle one with the eyeball/rightlight settings is the starting point. I put my hand over the camera so I can shield some of the light. This makes the picture seem brighter. Hold that for about 10 seconds, then click the "Use Automatic RightLight" settings button off. Then without taking your hand away, go to the owl/automatic settings tab and click off Automatic Settings. Then your perfect lighting holds. Easy enough.
