Great Printer for WiFi Network

Pros Great value, total flexibility, excellent performance
Cons Requires good knowledge of networking or a call to HP tech support.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Three printing solutions in one printer for anything from direct connect to networked printing.
The HP 6840 is not for the uninitiated in WiFi but for anyone who has a wireless router and a couple of computers, it should not be a formidable challenge. Just get your feet wet with WiFi basics first and then add this to your network.

The 6840 can function as a direct-connect USB2 printer, a wired (Ethernet) network printer or as a WiFi printer and it changes roles seamlessly and can coexist as a wired and WiFi printer at the same time.

Setup requires some knowledge of how to establish a Windows IP "Port" for a printer. The installation disk didn't get me where I needed to go and a call to tech support was needed but they were GREAT in walking me through the complete setup of this printer.

Used as a network printer (not "shared", network), it needs to be given an IP address. It can grab this from your router and go on quite happily, however it's the Windows side of things where there is one caveat. The printer can grab an IP address from the router which can be anything the router wants to give it BUT your computers will be looking for the specific IP address for the virtual port which was set up for the printer. If say the printer was set up as 192.168.0.104 and that is what is setup in your printer profiles then the router assigns 192.168.0.105 - the computers will search in vain for a printer they cannot reach.

This is easy to overcome by setting up your printer configurations in your computers and then going into your router and setting a static IP address for the printer so it gets the same address all the time. That's it.

In terms of speed and quality, this printer beats a 970cxi photo printer on both. The small ink cartridges can print about 700 pages of normal printing. Print full page photos and all bets are off but in normal printing, ink life is surprisingly good.

WiFi range is excellent even without an external antenna. It cooperates well with a WiFi range extender and is just the good workhorse which one expects of an HP printer.
