The Bottom Line:
If you care about sound quality please, please do not buy this system, get the Logitech Z-2300 instead for a few dollars more.
RRP: $249 NZD
Total RMS ouput: 48 Watts
RMS power per satellite: 9 Watts
RMS power subwoofer: 30 Watts
Quoted frequency response: 20kHz-30Hz
Signal-To-Noise Ratio: 80dB
Satellites: Two 1" NeoTitanium microdrivers, one sidefiring 2" midrange
Sub: One 6.5" long-throw woofer
Output level (SPL) Unknown
The price of this system does NOT influence any of these ratings, except "value".
Ratings are based on computer 2.1 speakers ONLY.
Treble: Easily the best (and only good sounding) part of this system. The twin 1" titanium micro drivers deliver high clarity and almost never saturate. Drums and female voices especially, are produced with great definition and clarity. Too bad the partnering 2" drivers in the satellites are so horrible as these would be very good sounding satellites otherwise. 8/10
Midrange: Good in the upper mid area, but only up to a point. Past 1/2 volume on most songs, the side firing 2" drivers begin to pop and distort. Lower mids produced by these satellites are far from acceptable for the price of this system. 5.5/10
Bass: The subwoofer on in this set really is a shocker. Midbass is extremely bloated and deep response is almost non-existent. Overall output is also pathetic for a 6.5" driver. Sonic blending with the satellite speakers is undesirable as well. The only asset this subwoofer has, is its relatively tight, punchy sound. 4.5/10.
Imaging: Average for a 2.1 system in this price level, the side firing midrange drivers help slightly. 6/10
Volume: Any songs with powerful midrange or bass notes in them will leave these speakers with a disapointing maximum volume. Rock music is acceptable however. 6/10
Overall Sound Quality: Very poor for what this set costs, the Logitech X-230 (which is 1/2 the price) sounds just as good. 6/10
Looks: A lot of the development money has obviously gone into the design of this system. Brushed aluminium is used in the satellites and looks very classy and solid. The satellites are also VERY small and do not take up much desk space. The silver/black theme used in the sub and satellites looks very nice. The included wired remote looks well made. 8/10
Build Quality: In most areas very good. However I noticed that some of the plastic on the back of the right satellite speaker was peeling off. This is because it was just stuck on with double sided tape! The sub uses 12mm mdf for a construction material and passes the knuckle tap test, too bad its sound does not follow :( Cables used throughout this system are of very high quality and the wired remote feels solid enough. The wireless remote is also made well. The fabric grill on the subwoofer feels very cheap and doesn't provide much protection. 7.5/10
Extras: Many extras are included in this system for its price including: treble/bass adjustment, wired remote, aux input, headphone jack, wireless remote and a RCA game adapter. 8/10
Value: This system would be good for a person who buys things by the way they look rather than how it performs. For the price the sound is shocking, however I won't say completely avoid it as many extras are included, and that may be more important to you. 4.5/10
