The Coby Projection Radio: Watch the Time on the Wall

Pros Illuminated Time on the Wall, Good Quality, Battery Back Up, Cost
Cons Strange Looking, White Color, Nothing Fancy
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a basic alarm clock, with old fashioned radio controls. However, it does illuminate the time on your wall.
Are you looking for an alarm clock, that you can watch the time on the wall, and dread how many hours of sleep you may or may not be getting? If this sounds like your idea of a fine idea, consider the Coby Digital Alarm Clock Radio A-78.Its not going to win any awards for being fancy, but it does keep time properly, along with having a battery backup. This is especially useful if you have electrical service through Dominion Virginia Power, which is a punch line to many jokes. This small circular shaped clock is a bit strange, and some would say that it looks a bit "modern." Its certainly not like the square alarm clocks that I've used over the years, and for the record, my primary one in the master bedroom is from the 1980's.

This is in my mother-in-laws room, although I've used it downstairs, when needing to get some sleep away from my rather active son. Thankfully a few clicks of buttons allow you to set the proper time, and to set up the alarm function. The illumination feature is neat, and I do wish my dinosaur of a alarm clock had this. You can look up at the wall, and the time is displayed in bright red colors. The numbers are easy to read, as are the green numbers on the face of the alarm clock. Kudos on the snooze button, as its so big, that you can easily get a few minutes of "z's" when necessary.

The alarm noise isn't that loud. I was a bit disappointed by this, as I like to be awakened by what sounds like a "NORAD style defcon noise." Its just a simple "beep, beep, beep." Unless you are hibernating, it will wake you up eventually, but deep sleepers might take a while longer to be roused from their slumber. If you don't like being throttled by an alarm sound, set it to the radio. This has fairly decent sound, but you are going to need an old fashioned knob, as there's no digital frequency bar either. All of the materials used on this are of fairly high quality, so it can probably take a few throws or drops, and the buttons are ultimately secure.

As for the battery backup, it does require a 9 volt, and the plug will fit into any outlet. The white color is a bit strange, but does anyone really care what their "morning tormenter" looks like? I don't, and am thankful for this as a backup downstairs, when my son's being a bad boy before a day of work. You can find this at discount stores, or online, and it only costs $15. That's a pretty good deal for an alarm clock, that puts the time where you can always see it. We've had this for over a year, and there's been no reliability issues, so don't let the Coby brand name necessarily scare you. Its a functional, practical type of product, and I have been happy with it.
