The Bottom Line:
This is a good home office printer, scanner, fax. It has been a solid performed for more than 6 months. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another Brother all-in-one printer.
I replaced an HP All in one printer with this one. I am much happier with the Brother. The Wireless connection is very easy to set up. The scanning is pretty good. And the print drivers and software won't drive you crazy.
In 6 months, I have replaced most of the color ink cartridges once, and one of them twice. I haven't replaced the black yet. So the MFC-685CW has been pretty frugal with ink usage. We mostly print web pages, and Microsoft documents with embedded images and graphs. We don't print a lot of hi-res photo's. But the ones we have printed have been adequate. For photo's we've found Walmart or Clark to be a better cheaper option. One minor short coming on this Brother printer is the capacity of the paper tray. Accepts about half of what I'm used to with the HP printers. So I find myself having to refill it more often.
I have read some folks complain about the paper feeder on this one. And it's true that if you block the paper tray on the output side, paper will jam. I've only had to deal with this once or twice. And it is a hassle.
The scanning works great. I like the automatic document feeder (ADF) for multi-page scanning. It's pretty reliable, and will handle 5 or 10 sheets at a time. If you have extra thick paper, or paper with folds, these will sometimes cause a feed error. But this has not been problematic.
There are memory card slots on the front of the printer for printing photos. The one area that the HP did excel above the Brother is that you could read memory cards and send them back to the computer. The MFC-685CW does not provide this functionality. However, most computers come with this option, so it's not much of a short coming.
