Pros Dynamic Short Novel that has a kick
Cons nothing

This review is part of a write-in for Censored and Banned Books. It is a topic I have wrestled with in other reviews and in other aspects of my life. I totally support free written expression and a world without authors like John Steinbeck would be a different world indeed. John Steinbeck... Read full review »

Pros Compelling story, believable characters
Cons In-context profanity will be offensive to some
Recommended it? Yes

Have you ever wanted something so badly that you could see it, smell it, touch it - describe it to the finest detail - all the while knowing that your deepest desire would forever remain unattainable? That's the tragedy endured by millions who lived through The Great Depression of the 1930's. There... Read full review »

Novella about loneliness and doomed dreams still packs punch

byStephen_Murray Feb 27, 2001
56 Helpfuls 57 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Dialogue
Cons A bit loose and self-indulgent at some points
Recommended it? Yes

Roughly a hundred pages, and easily transformed into a play and movie, Of Mice and Men would seem to be Steinbeck’s tightest construction. It has a plot that does not seem forced even though its design is very schematic. Like ancient Greek tragedies--or those of Steinbeck’s contemporary... Read full review »

The greatest novella ever written?

bydolphinboy Jun 27, 2010

Pros Writing, economy of word use, emotional impact
Cons Devastating ending, set eighty years ago
Recommended it? Yes

George and Lennie are migrant workers during The Great Depression, and they are best friends. George is very bright, but his experiences have left him jaded and cynical. Lennie, whose last name is ironically “Small,” is a very large, very strong, and not very bright man. They make a... Read full review »

The play Steinbeck adapted from his novella

byStephen_Murray Mar 17, 2011

Pros convincing tragedy tightened (review contains plot-spoilers)
Cons misogyny remains crucial to the plot

John Steinbeck’s billed his 1937  Of Mice and Men a “novel play,” divided into three acts of two chapters each. The novella is quite theatrical (and has been filmed twice).  The original text was staged by the Theatre Union in San Francisco. It seemed to Steinbeck and to... Read full review »

Of Mice and Men - The only good book in schools

byRhettMagic May 18, 2000

Pros Unforgetable characters
Cons Other school books aren't as good
Recommended it? Yes

Much like many students in my area, I was 'forced' to read this book in my freshman year of high school. At the time I hated all the books we'd read in the school. They'd all been so dull, with plots that I couldn't (or didn't want to follow) and characters that I just couldn't care for.

Cons Wish it were longer

John Steinbeck's 1937 novella, Of Mice and Men, is another one of his crowning achievements. I mean, forget about how fantastic books like East of Eden and Cannery Row are--this book is probably his most popular book this side of The Grapes of Wrath.

The book is about two... Read full review »

"I ain't got no people," George said. "I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone. That ain't no good."

George Milton is not alone. An itinerant ranch worker, he travels from place to place with his friend Lennie Small. They couldn't be more different. George is shrewd,... Read full review »

Symbolism is Abound in "Of Mice and Men"

Pros A sad a shocking novel with a surprise ending
Cons Mild profanity scattered throughout

American literature has always seen its share of great authors - F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Arthur Miller, and dare I say Kurt Vonnegut? However, no list of great American authors is complete without at least a few novels by John Steinbeck. Most famously known for "The Grapes of Wrath",... Read full review »
