Music in Bed - iHome iH5 Clock Radio for iPod

byzequ Aug 18, 2005
Pros Great idea well executed. Qualtity, feature rich, performs better than expected.
Cons Controls are a little stiff. No included remote.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Wake up and buy it!
Let's face it – buying an alarm clock is usually not a fun endeavor. By nature, alarm clocks are a necessary evil. Sometimes (See my review on the Sharper Image Sonic Boom Loud + Vibrating Alarm Clock (SA650)) very evil. The iHome iH5 Clock Radio for iPod takes some of the sting out of waking up in the morning and was definitely the first alarm clock I have ever bought that actually got me excited to bring it home and open it. The list of features in this machine is endless.

Choices

Waking up is almost a pleasure when you have the choice of buzzer, radio, or iPod (ok, maybe not a pleasure when using buzzer, but definitely the other two.) Of course, the best part about having the iHome iH5 Clock Radio for iPod in your bedroom is listening to your favorite music as you drift off to sleep with the knowledge that in the morning you will rise out of bed with the sounds of your choice. One of the best features of the alarm clock is that you can set a different sleep volume for drifting off, and in the morning your alarm will be as loud as you want. Or don't want. It is morning after all.

Speakerbox

First and foremost is the ability to dock any model iPod that you may have. Included in the box are different dock inserts for use depending on which iPod you own. You select the right size (mini, thin, thick, or shuffle), pop your device into the top, and listen to all the tunes stored in your iPod. Don't have an iPod? That's fine. Use the included cable (yes, included!) along with the line in jack and plug any input device for your listening pleasure. This is actually how one would use the shuffle as well. In this respect the iHome iH5 Clock Radio for iPod is very much a standalone speaker system. While not at the level of sound quality of the Bose Sound dock or similar (more expensive) devices, for a clock radio the sound is excellent and better than expected, more than suitable for the nightstand next to your bed, the intended home for this device. It should be noted that while your iPod is docked, with the exception of the shuffle, it is being charged. That is not true of all standalone speakers, and it is an essential feature since you will go to sleep with your music player plugged into this device. If the sound is not enough for you, there is actually a line out that enables the iHome iH5 Clock Radio for iPod to be plugged into a larger stereo or powered speakers. I would say that is overkill for a clock radio, but it's nice to know it's there, and would be worth doing if you had a stereo in your bedroom already.

The Love Below

Docking an iPod into a clock radio is all well and good, but without features and quality, this could easily become another useless iAccessory. Not to worry. The iHome iH5 Clock Radio for iPod is feature rich and solid. In addition to playing all your favorite iPod tunes, all the standard alarm clock features from a top of the line alarm clock are present. AM/FM radio play beautifully with included antennas, gradual sleep (with sleep timer) and wake features will lull and alarm respectively, and there are even included batteries already installed for emergency back up during a power outage. If you forget to dock your device and you have the alarm set to wake you up with the iPod, the buzzer will go off in its place. See? Features AND the alarm's got your back. What more could you need?

Under Control

As soon as you plug it in, the clock automatically (some may say magically) adjusts itself for the right time and date due to its internal 100-year calendar. Is the hour off a bit? It might be because this clock has a switch that adjusts for daylight savings time. Just flick it to the right or the left and you have leaped ahead or stepped back. Need to choose a time zone? It can do that too. There are adjustment knobs and levers for basically anything you need to do with an alarm clock as well as intuitive controls for radio and iPod as well. Volume and various settings such as changing radio stations, setting clock times etc. are controlled by two circular spin dials on top of the device, an obvious design nod to the iPod's own control wheel. The dials, as with all the buttons on this device, feel stiff and have a little too much resistance, but work well and are surprisingly precise. There is a remote control that can be bought seperately, and while it would be nice if it were included in the box, it is not entirely needed and can (mostly) be overlooked in this review.

Of course the iHome iH5 Clock Radio for iPod is white and stylish. The iH5 is "Made for iPod"-certified by Apple.

Wake up sleepyhead.
